Looking at buying a car. Need advice

Hey all, I already have a good daily driver in my soarer, but a friend of one of my good mates is selling his sprinter for 2 grand. I know its history pretty well, it was bought by a drift enthusiast who wanted to learn in a cheap car and he thrashed the shit out of it. Within 6 months the engine blew up. He sold the car to his friend for 800 bucks. This friend transplanted a CA18DET into and spent heaps of money and took care of it. Then he had to return to his home country and had to sell it, so he did to his friend (the current owner) for 2 grand.
Apparently it had transmission problems, radiator was leaking and a cracked winsdshield since this current owner had it, which he has all fixed (I want to check the receipts), and now he bought a R33 skyline and wants to get rid of the sprinter. Seeing as he only wants 2k for it, I'm a bit worried as I know how much money has gone into it. I know this information is a bit limited but I figured that people who have dealt with sprinters before would know some ballpark values. Thanks in advance.

So many bumps not enoug replies. Thanks anyways guys, I think I'm just going to go for it. At worst I should be able to get a grand in parts with the CA18DEt in there, should I not like the car. I'm going for a test drive on the weekend, so it should be the deciding factor. (After my mechanics opinion of course, don't want to buy a moneypit )

Considering that a bog-stock Sprinter in good condition costs a fair bit more than $2k, I'd put money on this Sprinter being a large pile of shit. Check very carefully for dodgy patched-up smash repairs and/or rust.

I would definatly go for this although i dont think that the CA18det is one of the better motors the head gasgets are renowned for blowing... and the motor isnt that good for large amounts of boost with the stock internals but i still say its well worth the 2k mark for sure as Norbie said bone stock go for considerably more then the 2k mark..... even if its a pile of crap i would buy it and drift!!!!
