AE86 new radiator - Hyundai Excel! Mon, 08 September 2003 04:26 Go to next message
For about 3 years now i've been neglecting to replace the AE86 radiator. Only tubes left, no fins. On Friday (25 degrees or so I think), it gave out and started overheating pretty bad.

After some quotes ($300 +) for a exchange or recore job got a bit scared so decided to scout the wreckers to see if I could find anything else to fit.

It just so happens the Hyundai Excel radiator is almost identical in diamensions. So I forked out $60 for one in near new condition which even came with a electric thermo fan!

Anyways.. its a pretty good radiator about 5mm or so thicker than the original core, has mounts for thermo fan on it and also a inbuilt temp sensor to switch the fan on/off.

The mounting points are all a bit different. If you can weld it would be really easy but as i cannot Crying or Very Sad I had to do my best with bolting brackets in.

All worked well though and fitted nicely.. Just thought I would share that with everyone as these radiators are sooo much cheaper!

Cheers
Joel

thanks for the info, always good to build the mental database Smile
im under the impression toyota hiace rad's are a close fit, are thicker than the sprinter and narrower which is good for those of us with front mounts.

Hmm I wish I took more notice of the type of excel.. The rear was a huge mess so not 100% sure but was a fairly new model. Next time im at the wreckers I'll get the model from the compliance plate.

The bottom outlet is perfect..

The top outlet is more in the centre of the radiator, which I actually found better for the 4AGE.
