MA70/MK3 Supra and MX83 Diff comparisons... Mon, 08 September 2003 06:37 Go to next message
I'd like opinions on the relative strength differences between these 2 diffs (apart from the extra mounting strength afforded by the Supra's 2 front mounting points - in a debate I'm having onanother forum, this would be moot anyway, as someone has mounted a MK3 diff in an MX83 carrier).

This link has pictures of the install, along with mine and others comments...

Yes, the housings look different. But, at the end of the day, as I understand it, they both share virtually identical G-series internals (ratios notwithstanding) and thus, one wouldn't be any stonger than the other...

Opinions?

There is no strength difference... a G-series is a G-series.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the g series LSD in mine is a four pinion centre and the g series open diff is only 2 pinion

The g series diff came out in both 2 and four pinion centres with or without LSD

the last digit of the axle code identifies the centre type

IE G315 (mine) is G series 31 (3.9) 5 (4 pinion LSD)

Fourth digit: no of pinions, ltd slip-yes/no

Code -pinions -ls
2 -2 -no
3 -2 -yes
4 -4 -no
5 -4 -yes

I'm pretty sure all G-series LSD's are of the 4-pinion variety (excluding the JZA70 torsens). Open centres are a different kettle of fish, but who cares about them? Razz

Besides, the crownwheel and pinion are the biggest factor when it comes to strength, and that's definitely the same across all G-series diffs.

Agreed.

Biased99 probably cares Very Happy . I mentioned the open centres as only the 91/92 Grandes had LSD as standard and as such Biased99's car is probably open centre, otherwise he wouldn't be considering a swap unless it was for the higher ratio available in the MA70.

I'm pretty sure my 89 MX83 was a G312 but that was 8 years ago and is sorta foggy now.

Cheers

BTW, Biased99,

I feel sorry for the boys in the US, most of them are college kids and can't stop drooling over your engine bay Rolling Eyes

You are correct, in that the axle code shown on my model plate is G312.
However, I have actually had the hemisphere from an MA70 Supra swapped into my diff, making it an LSD unit. It was this approach that I was advocating in the thread referenced above, rather than doing a "bodgy" install of an entire diff from an MA70, using a piece of exhaust pipe as a spacer...I just felt that the former approach would be neater, less hassle, and probably a better option at the end of the day...

I get the impression the guys on the forum over there have neither the cash or the expertise to do a changeover of the internals. Swapping over the rear cover and making a spacer was a logical option but definitely not one I would reccommend, the loading on that exhaust pipe is going to be fairly high, and the bushes were looking pretty sad on the rear of the cradle.

I'm a firm believer in do it once, do it right Smile
