icon5.gif  1jz-gte conversion Mon, 08 September 2003 11:29 Go to next message
Ive come across a front cut off a soarer with a 1jz-gte engine and manual gearbox in it. I am interested in putting it into a 1983 toyota supra. The front cut costs roughly $3500 and I want to pay someone to put it in for me. To do this conversion it must cost around the $5000 mark this includes buying the front cut fitting it and the replacement of anything else that needs to be done like the exhaust, diff, brakes etc. My question is is this a real figure im looking at? and what needs to be replaced if this engine goes in?, does the diff need to be replaced etc. Also if anyone has some info on this conversion and how to do it which would lower the costs of fitting that would be appreciated.

you can email the info to deluce@iprimus.net.au
cheers

No. A "real" figure would be closer to double that.

best way to lower the cost is to do it yourself

there is NO WAY you will get it done for $5k including the front cut paying someone else to do it. hell, $5k would be a cheap conversion if you did all the work.

some of the costs:
engine mounts: $250 (JAZE off these forums can get you in contact with the guy who makes them)
plumbing for intercooler: $150 (conservative)
exhaust: $1000 minimum (for 3" with a cheap muffler and cheap cat)
Chaser front-bulge oil sump - about $350, if you can find anyone who has one! (the soarer one wont fit the supra)
then the labour charges. They'll have to pull out your old engine and gearbox. put in the new engine. install new clutch, starter, gearbox. wire up your ecu. this is the expensive bit

you'll also need a 2jz-ge starter motor, and a w58 gearbox (found on the 2jz-ge, 7m-ge, and on some mk2 supras). the w58 will come with a clutch not made for 300+hp, so you'll need a new clutch.

on the plus side, the ma61 (your supra) wont need new brakes, the diff will also hold up nicely, and the fuel pump is good enough.
you can also sell the manual gearbox it comes with for $700+

dont get me wrong, it's worth every penny and will turn your supra into a wrx/skyline/180/HSV/XR6 turbo killing monster... but if you're paying someone else to do it, expect the cost to be closer to $10k than $5k

Dude, these guys have spoken well. The current budget for me doing everything in my 1GGTE swap sits at around the $5200 mark, and thats doing everything myself. The 1G is a cheaper engine to begin with, and this bolts straight into my car. I had to use some parts like the sump from my 1GEU, thats why I've been able to get away with it so cheap.

Seriously, those guys are on the ball, pay someone else to do it, and you're looking at around the $10k mark easy.

Trust me going fast aint cheap...My engine has cost me about 6k alone to get it running...tho it does have $1500 worth of conrods! I suspect headers will be about $1000, and the twin 2.5 into one 3" exhaust will be around another $700 id say...
Overall itll cost me about 10k too...But i, as norbie and draven will have a serious performance car...and you'll enjoy it! Lets face it...the ma61 is a sweet car..and after pulling mine down, i realise just how good quality and robust their design is.

OK, firstly, I'm puting in some nice optional extras, planing for meeting strict engineering scrutinisation and not doing as much of the work myself as I would like to.

Anyway, I was laying in bed lastnight doing the sums. By the time I finish the 1JZ swap, give it some nice bolt-on power-ups, get the interior looking pretty, get some sounds and other mods - I will of sunk about $17K into the mobile money pit (including purchase of the car)!

Food for thought Razz

Ahhh ... you're going for the pedal-powered 120Y as well, eh? I was planning on doing this one next - with a big red BOV so it'll make it into Hot4s Razz .

Justin

$100??????

Pffft! Yeah, my 2JZ conversion only cost a hundred bucks, after I bought the engine, the transmission and all the other required parts. Razz

Actually, someone just did my conversion and paid for all the parts for free because I looked so sad driving a N/A 7M powered ma70 Razz Razz . They said it worth it just to see my big smile as I drove around with the 1jz under the bonnet!!

My dad and I did virtually all the work on my (relatively easier than a ma61+1jz) conversion (only thing we didn't do was wheel alignment and exhaust), and it still cost another $2000 easily on top of the half-cut cost. This is with no real mods at all.

It costs a lot to do a good conversion, and if you can't do very much yourself then you're better off getting a car that is already done, or getting an MA70/jza-70, esp in perth.
