I love threads like this. Allow me to summarise the eventual outcome.
Corolla fans: buy a Corolla! Twinkies rule! SIK!!
Sprinter fans: buy an AE86 and drift it. No other car on earth can drift like an AE86.
Supra fans: buy a Supra, it's a Real Man's car. They do skids!
FWD Celica fans: buy a Celica, they look fast.
RWD Celica fans: buy a Celica, no-one expects them to be fast.
Hilux fans: buy a Hilux, lower it 3 feet and fit impossibly large chrome wheels. Yes, I'm serious.
And so on. If you actually want some useful advice, do as Draven suggested and tell us what you want in a car. At the end of the day it's your money, and you have to live with your purchase!

What is it with people and AE86's? I wonder if when Toyota made that car they realised they would create this rabid fanbase of people who loved to take them and dorifto them all over the place. Seriously, I don't get what the insane obsession is, they look like every typical 80's car, boxish, no chrome and no style.... *prepares for flame action

Old Celica's don't have some insane cult following though... there's only a handful of nutbags left who like them.

for 6k you could by a Faaaaaalcon or a vn commondore too !
we still dont know what this fella wants in a car - he might need a tradesmans van for haulling tools for all we know ..
My vote actually goes to the st162 as well - for the price they are well optioned - look pretty good - go very swiftly , are very well optioned - and relatively cheap to run ( if he wants a toyota )

I'd say he want a toyota being as the forum he came to and all toyota owners really deep down want to buy a celica, and being as there are only two real kinds of celica's, the rwd and the gt-4's, he's going to have to get a rwd unless he doubles his budget, and being as the best rwd model is the 23, thats the only car for him to get!
see, a fair, honest, open minded elimination process and the 23 is the model of choice

So what I should I be looking for when looking at ra23's or ta22's? Does the car have any troubles? Whats a good price range? Could someone point me to where I could find more information on these cars, especially the models they came in?
Cheers

I picked mine up for 3500, which was autobox, body in excellent condition, really good paintjob. For a 6000 celica you would want something that was totally immaculate, you should only really have to spend 4 or 5 tops. As a guide, Joe sold his ta23 for 5000 recently http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=16592
look for rust in all the general old car places, bottom of the doors, wheel arches etc.
