Hi Flow Cat / Upgrading Induction System

Hey. My Celica isn't that fast, but i want to at least be able to beat other celica drivers. I don't have a lot of money. I got a hot dog muffler not too long ago. I was wondering if getting all the crap outta my catylictic converter would make any difference? Like would it allow the gas to flow a bit more freely hence freeing up more HP? Even if it's only 2 or 3.
Can I just unbolt it or something, then smash the crap outta it? Or is it welded on and i would have to chop it off and then weld pipe or the smashed out cat back in?
Also, I want to improve my air induction system. I hear that my model celica ST184 1990 already has a good system, where a pipe comes from the front of the car up to the air box. Could i improve this with just a bit of piping or something? I just bought a new filter for it.
Thanks alot guys

with the cat no the best idea to do especially if u get defected and have to go to the epa for emisions test i dont think that u will pass
also if u are found out there is a hefty fine involved not a great idea at all....

your air intake already sounds pretty good.
regarding your cat, that's commonly known as "coring", and involves a large screwdriver and a mallet. it's illegal, a bit loud, and involves ruining a good piece of exhaust. if your car has bolts weither side of it, you can just unbolt it and core it.
if it doesn't, it'd be cheaper for you to pay an exhaust place to just remove the cat and weld in a piece of pipe

Most exhaust shops won't do that for you though - they cop massive fines if found out, way more than the owner has to pay. It's not worth the risk for the sake of a few bucks.
Anyway don't be a cheapskate, buy a high-flow cat and be done with it.

sprry
should read "if you have a friend who owns an exhaust shop"
norbie's right tho... if you have to go to the trouble of welding it, you're better off just buying a hi-flowone

How much does a high flow cat cost? How much performance increase can i expect from a 5S-FE with just a hot dog muff on it? What brands do you guys recommend?
Thanks

high flow cat, on a 5s-fe?
dpends how big the exhaust system is, but you'd be looking at close to $200. On a stock non-performance engine, like the 5s-fe, you'd get minimal gains

lol, well with the system right, I hate the noise of a big exhaust, but right now I have a K&N Panel with Cold Air as well as extractors, and I was thinking, well heck, till I decide to bite the bullet and spend $850 on an exhaust system why not have a hi-flow stuck in and enjoy the small performance gain from a high flow.
but my exhaust goes - Extractors -> origional pipe with oxy sensor on it -> stainless flex pipe -> cat -> rest of exhaust -> stock muffler
what do you reckon 'bout a hi-flow?
I should be at uni now
