Who won Rally Australia?

Haven't heard a thing about it? Still in Melbourne and the lack of coverage over here is very dissapointing, in WA it's much better publicised?! To think there's constant talk of the rally moving to Victoria too, but doesn't seem to have the interest?

Apparently the premiers signed some kind of deal this week or was it last week, whatever, to say that they wouldn't try to poach everyones major events. I breathed a sigh of relief. WA is the best place in aus for the rally, we have a unique surface, alot of experience with making it the best rally on the tour, and alot of support from the drivers, manufacturers. The new Glouster Park layout is really good too, much better then langley park although the parking could be better
but yes, Petter won the rally.

"You are my Solberg, my Petter Solberg
You make me happy, when skies are grey
On dust and gravel, flat out you travel
Please don't take my Solberg away"
-Theme song for Petter as sung by deranged vodka-addled Norwegians.
Woohoo! Subaru is probably the only decent manufacturer in the championship atm (Toyota lost their decency in 95/96 and then left when they realised they'd never get it back)
I thought the spectating this year was pretty awful with the single service park... I didn't have time to go to it the whole event and missed out on autograph oppurtunities. Plus the spectator points where pretty bad, the enthusiast points were alright, but more often than not, you just got camera shots of people with media passes that get front row seats!
And the bauxite surface in WA is definitely unique. Unfortunately I was stuck in the passenger's seat all weekend (trying to get dad to go the right way), but suffice to say, the rental VY Commodore was suitably 'tested' on the surface over the course of the weekend

Actually, they left so they could spend their money on Le Mans, so then they could allocate most of their global motorsport funds to F1

That's one way of putting it - but I honestly felt that Toyota were better off leaving the WRC forever. Aside from the Tercel, it's probably Toyota's weakest moment in their history (Toyota Japan did know, and approve of, the 'tactic')

Weakest moment? Are you kidding me? The WRC gave us the GT-4, and also two legends of the sport won in toyota's, Juha and Carlos. Personally I think its one of their strongest motorsport endevours. They where also pretty instrumental in pushing the technology as well, the Corolla was light years ahead of the other cars at the time.

Both the Celica GT4 and the Corolla were inspirational cars, what I think he is referring to is when Toyota was thrown out of the WRC when it was discovered that "someone" had designed the compulsory restrictor to move out of the way under load.
It was pass inspection but in the heat of racing a lot of its restriction disappeared

Yeah so what, Peugeot where thrown out after idiotically taking the FiA to court when they banned Group B cars, but they came back. And that was worse against Peugeot, cause they wanted to keep racing cars with such poor safety that they where basically death traps.

The group B cars weren't entirely lacking in safety, they were however - dangerous by design.
The biggest problem was the proximity of the turbo to the fuel tank, and the fact that lots of fuel tanks were almost directly underneath the driver. Exploding cars was a very big issue, and the frightening speed which they could attain out on the stages was also quite deadly.
Rallying has always been a deadly sport though, and I'm not convinced that Group B made it much more dangerous than it was (no doubt it was more dangerous though). Ari Vatanen had three MASSIVE accidents in a row in a Group B peugeot and he's still alive to talk about it.
Just in the past year - even with modern safe rallying - we've had co-drivers retire from injuries (Mannisenmaki for example) and two top british drivers (names have slipped my mind atm) die in America and so it goes on.
