running in and oils...

i have nearly done 500k's with the Penrite 20w-50 Running in oil. i am driving to brissie on the 19th and want to change the oil before i go down. (or in the next couple days).
i normaly run Penrite HPR15 in my engines which is semi synthetic and non-friction modified.
will the HPR15 be ok to run in my engine even though i've only done 500k approx?
thanks..

No don't put any semi synthetic , synthetic or friction modified oils in the motor until about a 1000 k's , this is to make sure the rings are well bedded , if you put any of those types of oil in before the rings are bedded they will never seal properly .

ok, so even thought the HPR15 semi synthetic is non-friction modified like the running in oil it wont be any good.
i will go another 500 on some new running in oil then.

when i rebuilt my motor, i heard many rumours such as, don't use any sunthetics for XX K's, and also don't use running in oil (too much wear initially)
i would love to hear from a proper engine builder out there (hint hint) as to what is the correct running procedure.
my cam guy also said that after running in, to only use good synthetic (non-aus penrite, or mobil 1) as the extra lobe forces will kill the cam and lifters with crappier oil....
help is much appreciated!!!

Here is this guys one that someone showed me before:
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
Its pretty against the grain as far as what I've seen, but his theory is sound, I was wondering if anyone else could fill me in on their opinions...

man, that's interesting...
as i understand it, during break in you want to a) make the ring conform to the bore shape, and b) knock off the ridges of the hone pattern.
there are different hone patterns used for different apps, like deep scoring marks for endurance (more oil on rings) or shallow with a lot of flat between scores for power (to reduce friction)
some ppl say to use a 120grit finish then run in slowly, some say to use 120 then 600, then do a light finish with 1200 to remove the tops of the ridges...
all i can say is i'd like to find out from a few circuit, rally and endurance racers to see what they use...
i also think that the bore and ring material will make a big difference, due to the different hardnesses etc...
oh, and that i followed 'textbook run-in' and have a lot of blowby.. or was that the 20 months of high rpm? hmmmmm
i might give this method a go next time....(and who can resist anyways )
