Hey everybody!
I just found your forum
not bad
Ok here is the deal, I am considering getting a 76' celica, i love the shape of these and always have.
Just got a few questions for youz
I will have between 6-10 grand to spend on it.
*How hard can you get them to go (and what do they compare to? like it would be able to beat a turbo silvia or somethin or v8 lol)
*whats the insurance on them like, with and without mods (i'm 20yrs, with not so good traffic history)
*how do they handle?
mmmmmm, if you can tell me anythin else interesting about them, do so, the more info the better
and i don't want, don't get one, they are shit comments please.
ohhh yeh, this is the shape i speak of

yes i realise that is a shit looking one, but that's the sort i'm looking at, i wanna make one like phat and go hard

Well if you have that much cash and want an old skool celica find one with a very decent body then do it up (ie suspension,mags/tyres/exaust,) you could end up with something like this

with lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ put into it.

Don't get a 22 tho, they 23's are much sexier For your price range you'd be looking at a 1G-GTE conversion which will give you plenty of bang for your buck. If you want to double your budget, you'd be looking at a 1UZ-FE conversion, which is stepping into insane terriotory

If you were to double the budget, then the 3S-GTE is the go, not the 1UZ-FE...
If you were to triple or quadruple the budget, then put a 1UZ-FE in there and turbo it.
But yeah, bang for your buck would be the 1G-GTE.

Ok thanks guys, but i can't double my budget.
so i'm guessing that the 1G-GTE is the go. As I sed I am a newbie, so here's some more questions:
*whats this engine in newbie terms? (ie 2.4 litre turbo or whatever)
*how much would this conversion cost?
*how hard would it go (ie. 1/4 times and 0 - 100 times)
Also:
*Insurance on a RA23 (with the engine convo and basic mods, such as exhaust and wheels etc..) for 20yo with not so good traffic history
thanks for the help people.

I did, but it didn't answer half the question i had. I am fully a newbie when it comes to celicas let alone 1970's celicas.
I'll try them again, just in case i missed somethin

To answer your questions:
1. You can get them to go as hard as you want them to go, it's just a question of how much you want to spend. Yes you can comprehensively spank a Silvia or your typical Aussie V8 with a suitable turbo engine conversion as suggested above.
2. Without mods they're pretty cheap to insure. With mods, it depends how modded we're talking but in most cases you might as well bend over and grab your ankles.
3. Handling in standard form is average to woeful, depending on the condition of the suspension components (which is usually pretty poor since they're 25+ years old now). However with a few simple upgrades they'll handle extremely well.
My only suggestion is you take the time to look for a good specimen; there are lots of very dodgy RA23's out there, and most have succumbed to rust and/or dodgy smash repairs. If you get a dodgy one you'll spend a small fortune just getting it up to scratch, so it's worth waiting for the right one and paying a bit extra for it.

Ok thanks man,
with the insurance, i'm thinking like the engine conversion to 1G-GTE and other mods such as exhaust, rim/wheels, like nothin major atm, besides the engine conversion, do u have like an estimate say like "2 grand" for comprehensive insurance?
For suspension upgrade, so it handles well, is goin to cost heaps, i'm just talking to make it handle well, better than average.
sorry bout all the q's, but i am full newbie.

not sure for suspension, but look in the tech articles for the brake upgrade, as this will need doing too. In terms of conversion cost, if you are going to do the work yourself, factor in about 5-7grand, someone else, add a few more g's for labour.
Nark, I don't like your triple/quadruple forecast. A 1UZ-FTE is what I want to do as a second project and I was thinking about 20grand would get me there, thats not including the car which I have. How much did Jamies cost him you know? And does he have a website just to his car? It's difficult trying to glean stuff from all over the net on that thing, it looks different in a couple of places... just alittle off topic as well, did he get that thing road reg'd?

If you just want decent handling, all you need to do is what I've done - slightly lowered springs (nothing insanely low), decent shocks, and urethane bushes. In conjunction with good tyres it will out-handle the vast majority of cars on the road.

What I meant was that a 1UZ swap isn't worth it unless you plan to upgrade it at the same time.
It costs the same as a 3S-GTE conversion and the 3S-GTE will give you heaps more bang.
The extra money goes into modding the 1UZ, at which point it *will* be worth it...

Jamie pretty much did EVERYTHING himself also, so factor that into your price.

Does Jamie have a website about that car? I've seen bits and bob's in various spots but nothing totally dedicated to it. He got 245kw out of that thing, how much would a 3S-GTE realistically give?

245kW was at a VERY conservative 7psi......
Stock as a rock 3S-GTE will put out about 130kW I think.
Worked? Well, there are stories of 1000hp 3S-GTEs.... Not to mention the rally cars and JTTC Supras...

Yeah, I'll bet its easier to get 1000 horses out of the V8 then the four tho but I think anyone would be happy with 245kw in a car weighing around 1000kg, I know I would. I still reckon the 1UZ is the way to go, if not for rareness and v8 lust

Yup. As I said. The 1UZ isn't worth it unless you plan on modding it.

I know, 9second passes in apparently an unopened 1UZ. I wonder how hard it would go when they start opening it up and playing around!
