Any 18R-GU's for sale in Adelaide? Fri, 12 September 2003 05:18 Go to next message
Hey guys, I'm looking for an 18R-G, or 18R-GU for my RA28 celica. I would like one in good condition, reconditioned, or low kms, or something along those lines. I noticed Adelaide Jap Dismantlers had one for sale on their website with gearbox for $1650, is this the kind of price I can expect to pay, or are cheaper ones around? Is the gear box really necessary, or will it just bolt up to my existing celica 5 speed. Finally, what else besides the motor would be needed to complete the conversion, and where in Adelaide can I get it all?
Thanks for your help,
Tim

I have one in my RA28 which was getting 62rwkw... before we fixed the timing which was out be 12 degrees!!!
if u can wait about 6 months to a year... ill sell it to ya. and it'll be a lot cheaper than 1650... much cheaper.

P.S. yes you can use the standard RA28 box behind it.

Hey Aussie, what kind of condition is the engine in? Any modifications at all? Any info on the engine would be appreciated. Just interested, what will be taking its place? Smile
Cheers,
Tim

Hey $1650 is a BIT BIT pricey for an 18RGu... even with a gearbox..

Unless the motor and box are rebuilt with a warantee thats a bit steep,

I paid $500 for my 18R-GEU which came minus clutch, exhaust manifold. But it came with computer, wiring harness, all EFI gear, radiator, altinators starters, AFM Pod filter, etc..

Had to ship it from NSW but it was worth it for the price i paid.

Remember everything may not go as according to plan, because these motors are approx 20 years old things are getting a bit vague and harder to get..

Id save a bit of cash for replacing stuff, internally and externally because they can be pretty thrashed by the previous owners.. and the owners before that.. etc.

Ive spent about another $2000 on the car since starting the conversion !! if not more! Its been off the road for almost 9 months now.. i thought it would be a short term thing!!

Good luck bro, keep looking you'll find a decent one eventually!

City Auto Dismantlers have an 18rgeu minus the EFI set up, it looks fairly new, the timing chain tensioner is still gold.
Not sure how much the want for it though, and you'd probably want to pull it apart and clean the bores out, it has nothing stopping crap getting into the ports.

Hehe.. id be interested on how much they paid for it!! especially through Toyota! Shit, the cheapest replacement tensioner and guides i could find (after a few weeks of searching our big wide country) were around $150-200 for each guide, and about $80-90 for the tensioner..

New timing gear took my motor from a $500 motor to a $750 motor without doing them all! hehe, same price as my new clutch or headers!

She's not too bad, the usual 18rg noisy chain, and lower compression in 1st piston, but we suspect a tappet problem is causing it. We may have a look at it and fix it before I sell it. With those probems it was still getting 62rwkw with the timing way out, so we aren't too sure whether it has any mods to it or not?? I bought it the way it is now (except for replacing the valve springs). May be dyno-tuned soon, so I'll let u know the power of it afterwards. Its carby-fed btw

In answering your query... the engine lined up to replace it will be a 1GGTE Evil or Very Mad

rust is being cut out and new metal welded in now so soon it'll be back on the road... come to the next CCC cruise/meeting if u wanna come for a ride Very Happy

I sent Adelaide Jap an email, and the reply was that the engine was bone stock, and hadn't been touched. So, how much should I be looking to pay for an 18R-G motor? Would I be better off throwing a weber and extractors on the old 18R-C?
Cheers,
Tim
