4agze - what oil works best? Sun, 14 September 2003 09:11 Go to next message
Im not sure what oil to put into my 4agze. Im currently running a 5W-40 in my WRX and was going to put the same in the 4agze. Is this to thin?

What are you guys running in your 4agze?

dpends what condition it's in
generally I'd say that's too thin for an oldish 4a-gze, but if it's in great nick/rebuilt... then it could work fine.
I'd suggest a good 10-50, assuming your engine doesn't blow any smoke.
if it does, might have to go a bit thicker

I had a small oil leak around my sump, i was using 10w-40w then i change to magnatec, the one with the molicuals that stick to metal to avoid start-up damage, and the difference is awesome, the idle is alot smoother and take off is improved 1000%, stop the leak too.

I fully recommend it.

But generally what Draven says is pretty much the same as i wouldve said.

Hope it works out.

FWIW try a compression check, you never know what condition your rings are in.

This has been covered quite a few times before.

I personally run Shell Helix Ultra (5W-40 from memory) and find that it helps with cold starting, and quitens down a lot of noise in the head when cold. For some reason my GZE makes a fairly audible knocking noise in the head when running anything higher than a 10W oil until it gets hot (& no, its not the usual forged piston slap Smile )

Penrite HPR15 seems to be another popular option.

Cheers
Phil

I think I will stay with the 5W-40 and see how we go with that.

While Im on the topic of oils ..... What weight oil for a T50 box would be best. Any brands stand out over the rest? What are you guys using?

Cheers
Andrew
