High idle problem-1jzgte Sun, 14 July 2002 19:40 Go to next message
Hi-Looking for any help someone can offer. I'm still battling the high idle problem in my us spec mk3 supra with a 1jz swapped in. Here are the symptoms:

High idle-3000 rpms
Diesels (runs for a second) after you shut it off with the key
Everything under the hood feels extremely hot, even when only ran for a minute-temp gauge is normal

I thought the idle air control valve was bad-it ohm checked high and seemed like it didn't want to close when battery voltage was applied. Cannot located a 1jz one locally, so I retrofitted a 7m one after varifing the operate the same.-no luck, same problem.

Here's the kicker-does not do it all them time.Sometimes she will fire up and run fine. One time I was forced to drive it home with the high idle-the whole time, RPMS will not go below 2500, it was like cruise control was one as the car would continue to pull itself when in gear and foot off the gas.
The problem first started very intermititly, could just turn it off and fire back up and it would be fine. Now it seems to do it almost all the time and is hard to get it to not do it. Thanks for any help anyone can give..

Forgot to add, it ran perfect when I first swapped the engine in.Started to do this before any modifications were done to the car-Thanks

Another problem-went to check for engine codes, last time I checked for codes, the idle was normal and didn't give me any codes. This time, the idle is high, and the check engine light will not even flash when te1 and e1 are jumpered....

There is only really 1 thing that could make an engine idle fast and that obviously is air getting into the inlet manifold.

A couple of things I'd try...

Take the inlet pipe off the throttle body and totally cover the opening with your hand, this will eliminate the throttle butterfly.

take the hose off the Idle speed control valve and block the opening, this will confirm or eliminate that.

Do the same for any other hoses on the inlet manifold after the throttle butterfly.

Good luck.

but should any of that matter on a MAP sensor setup? The fact that I now cannot check for codes is leaving me to think it is some kind of electrical problem, but I don't know where to start looking...

You could physically check if the throttle butterfly (located at the front of the plenum with a cable attached to the top of it) is stuck. If the throttle cable is sticky, you should be able to bush the throttle back shut by turning the cam wheel that the cable is attached to.

The fact that it is MAP sensed means that it will run fine with a big air leak. The problem is that too much air is getting past the throttle butterfly and into the manifold, this could be happening through the butterfly, the idle speed motor or any other hose on the manifold.

If this happened on an AFM engine and the air wasn't going through the AFM it would idle rough and stall or not start at all instead of idling fast.

Get a piece of hose, stick it in your ear, and with the other end probe around all the hoses and gaskets on the inlet manifold. You should be able to hear air sucking if there are any air leaks. If not, try taking out each thing that could be causing the problem by blocking them off (butterfly + idle speed motor) as i described earlier.
