I'm a newbie - need directions... Sun, 14 September 2003 12:54 Go to next message
Hey, i just bought a '89 AE92 SX Hatch. i opened the bonnet and took a look at the radiator and the coolant bottle and noticed that they are filled with a brown liquid - my guess is rusty water?...

i just needed some directions on how to flush it all out?.. ive been told its an easy job - so i dont wanna be wasting money by taking it to the mechanics when its something i could probably do.

any help would be appreciated.

cheers.

as a real easy start, look to see if there as a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator (like a stopcock).
if so, then open it and let all the shit drain out. (preferably onto grass??). if not, then pull off the bottom radiator hose connects to the radiator, and drain it out that way.

then refill with water, take the car for a drive, then drain.
keep doing that until the water comes out clear...

you can use 'radiator cleaner' but the stuff is usually caustic, and will eat away metal from somewhere (i guess)...

you can also pull the radiator out of the car, and fluch it using a hose.. again keep fluchin till the water comes out clear, and run the water in both directions...

once the water stays clean in the car for a drive or two, then drain out, fill with XX amount of ehtylene glycol (coolant concentrate) then top up with water....
i like abour 30% coolant to water, but some ppl like more or less..

all i did when i flushed it was drain it and stick i hose in the filler neck and flush it out nice and good, then pour in some new stuff.
easy peasy

dude make sure that it is rusty water first because genuine toyota coolant is a rusty/brown color, unlike aftermarket stuff which is green.

stewart - id be rather wary of simply undoing the drain plug on old rusty cooling systems - the number of times ive seen the things never make a full seal again when you tighten them... if its not leaking, my moto is to not open it Smile

i prefer to just drop the bottom hose off - much faster too Very Happy

and regarding the refilling process - note that it may take SEVERAL attempts at filling the system before you can be assured that there is no air left. take it for a drive, turn the heater on, park it on a slope etc etc ... and just keep adding water over the next few days

cheers

yeah what ed said make sure u get rid of all the air in the cooling system and use the bottom hose to drain the system

in regards to the brown muck
is it milky gooey brown ?
or is it just normal water but just brown

if the brown shit is kinda thickish and milky then you could have a blown head gasket

and when u flush it all out do it properly
dont just do the radiator do the whole system

take the thermostat out and do a flush in both directions of the heater hoses....making sure your heater is "ON" inside the car

this isnt neccesary for a normal coolant change but it is in this case cause your whole system is dirty

OK if the NRMA dudes didnt say it was a blown HG then it should be cool....cause its an obvious difference

well by doing the whole system i mean...exactly that
not just the radiator but go through the whole thing...

get a hose....stick in all the heater hoses in all directions to get all the crap out till the water comes out clear and taking out the thermostat too like i said b4

sorry i cant xplain this well its hard to xplain with words and no pics

fuck it where do u live
come round and ill do it for u ...
