Battery continues to run flat! - bad alternator wiring? Mon, 15 September 2003 12:08 Go to next message
After the conversion the battery has run flat twice now.

Im pretty sure it has something to do with the alternator connections and them perhaps being a little mixed up?

Its for a 2jzge and the 3 pin plug is a little different to other plugs on a conventional altenator.

Much appreciated if anyone can help!

I didn't make any changes whatsoever to my alternator wiring after the conversion - the MA61 alternator wiring plugged right into the 2JZ alternator and everything worked perfectly! What did you change?

um i didnt change anything....someone else wired it up, but the charge light isnt coming on in the dash either and the fuse is good, and the light is fine.

Do you happen to know which wires went where?

basically i know i have 2 out of 4 right

so the other two may be around the wrong way...or the charge light circuit has been killed somewhere.

when i buaght my supra i found out every morning the battery was dead flat, i made sure to take the fuse out of the radio, but it still went flat. I checked that the alternator works, but i didn't have a multimeter, insteaed i revved the engine with the lights on and the lights got brighter so i guess that means the alternator works. But on further inspection it seems my alternator has no fuse and the previous owner has simply wired the alternator up bypassing the fuse socket. So i don't know if that has something to do with it. I imagine this is pretty dangerous and will possibly stuff my alternator without fuse protection, infact my whole electrical system could get rooted from it.

Is it running flat (while driving)? or is it going flat when you've parked the car?

Take it to a battery place and ask them to test out your battery. The one I go to - Globe batteries on Davies Rd - often test my battery and alternator etc. They can tell you straight away whats wrong (if its battery or alternator). When I buy any car or straight after my conversion I take it there to make sure I wouldn't get stranded at night on a lonely road ...

If your light doesn't come on and its less than 12 volts (what is the maximum voltage that the light comes on?) while running, then definately look at the plug. First look at the wire from the battery + to the alternator as 2 weekends ago I did an alternator change on Kylie's corona only to find when I put the thick wire on that it wasn't healthy, so I put another ring thingmy on it, soldered it up well and put it on. 14.4 volts now Smile

Glen, you need to get the www.autoshop101.com wiring diagrams. Also obtain some MA61 wirind diagrams (any Toyota dealer should be able to provide these for you if you beg enough). You will need to trace out the wires that are plugged into your altenator and connect them as per the wiring diagram. Looking at the state of your loom, I would be very concerned that a wire (or 10) has been inadvertently chopped at some point.

Sorry we couldn't sus that out for you on Friday night - there's only so much that could be done in an evening!

After a close insepction and much 'multimetering' there are a few problems.

All the alternator wires are on the wrong way haha whoops.

and the wire to the check light isnt connected ha!

i shall do all this then report back with findings.

Like I said, the alternator wiring is 100% plug'n'play... why had it been fiddled with in the first place?

No worries Dave, it was an awesome effort by both you, Dave and Dave, i know you were tired and just trying to get me started so i dont blame you, i have traced everything using a bizillion print outs of diagrams and im pretty sure i have it sused.

I think the wire to the dash came undone when we lifted the fuse box. It had been previously cut and shrink wrapped....poorly.

Yes we noticed! Shocked

If I were you I would DEFINITELY wire in a fuel pump relay.

Yeah I agree. Mine had to be extended to the other side of the bay, but even I could do that. My warning light works too (2 bloody alternator rebuilds, bloody power steering leak)

No fuel relay is OKish, but it affords no safety in case of frontal collision, engine stalling and a fire. Fuel continues to be pumped into the engine bay.... Confused

Toyota have kept the wiring colours about the same sence about 1970...

Yellow with green tracer tends to be charge light
Black with yellow tracer tends to be ignition power
White thick wire gos to the battery (can be used for sense wire on modern ALT's)
and on modern ALT's there is a thick black wire for B+ or charge to battery

I have also had an alt short out internaly and draw 10 amps from the battery all the time but still turn the charge light off
