18RGU distributor question... Wed, 17 September 2003 17:25 Go to next message
I'm buying a distributor from someone and this was his last note to me;

"please note that I did modify the distributor as it has a slightly faster
curve and a locked vacuum advance.

P.S.this thing ran awsesome"

In the few years I have messed around with my Celica I have never played with the distributor. Can someone explain why he did this and if I should or shouldn't go through with the sale?

I want to understand more fully what I am getting (might get).

Thanks,

Drew,

He's modified the mechanical advance mechanism to give a more aggressive timing curve. It's a pretty common thing to do with performance engines. You may have to run your engine on higher quality fuel though.

i am wondering about doing this myself, although i really don't know how nor where to begin.

I had worried that i have ended up with a less agressive curve after using 22R-E dizzy internals to make up my electronic ignition. It's those little spinning weights that control the advance curve isnt it? I really have NO IDEA! Confused

Yeah, it's all those weights and springs inside the dizzy which form the advance curve. If you take it to a performance workshop familiar with old-school engines they'll be able to re-curve your dizzy however you want it. You're right, the 22R advance curve is probably far from optimal for an 18R-G!
