18R-GEU intake pipe Thu, 18 September 2003 06:23 Go to next message
I'm finally going to put my 18R-GEU back into my Ra28 on the weekend, I'm going to be using a filter box from an Ra65 but are there any cars that have similar intake piping from the AFM to the throttle body that would suit my application.
Any ideas welcome.

Cheers

I ended up using flex tube which I obtained from a truck parts store. Not ideal but it works and it's easy. Smile

Flex tube as in stronger air ducting (black stuff with steel belts?), I used this previously and found it tore or collapsed easly.

Yeah it's sort of black rubbery stuff with steel wire wound around it. I've been using it for years with no problems.

Does it fit??

I'll be visiting pick-and-pay-heaps on sat with a tape measure,
I've got some pipe from a supra that I picked up on a whim but the bend in the pipe is too shallow.

I wonder if I could heat and bend that pipe??

Where did you put your washer bottle and over flow bottle?
I can't see them in the picture.

Thanks Norbie Smile

Does that hose have connection at the ends for the clamps (ie. an off the shelf part) or is the hose "off a reel" and has cut ends.
Yes this is what I used previously but mine was off a reel and sealing the ends was a problem.
on a side note: how is your fuel setup and how (lifter pump - surge tank - high pressure - rail) and where did you locate pumps (surge tank)?

Simon.

Overflow and washer bottle are mounted on the passenger side. You can't see them in that pic cos they weren't there at the time. Smile

Yeah the hose was taken off a reel and cut to size. It seals OK, just clamp it down real good. Smile

My fuel setup is real simple. I mounted a VL pump in the little compartment in the side of the boot (ie lower than the tank) and connected it to the fuel tank and fuel line using the appropriate adapter fittings and EFI hose. Fuel line and return line is stock and untouched. I don't have a surge tank or a lift pump, and from my experience it appears they aren't necessary at all. Smile

My RA40 setup was like that and I only ever had problems when the tank was very near empty.

When I had the 18RGEU in the RA28 before with the fuel pump in the engine bay I found the car would starve for fuel below 1/2 a tank on corners.
would that be the amount of line between the tank and the pump on the "suck" side?

Probably more to do with the low, flat tank in an RA28, as opposed to the high, tall tank in an RA23. Having an EFI pump in the engine bay isn't a good idea though; they generally don't like to "suck" from the other end of the car.

that makes sense now I think about it. But for the purposes of putting the engine in the car to get it running it served its purpose. this time I'm doing it properly for engineering purposes and I am trying to avoid running fuel lines inside the car thus using a lifter pump located near the tank and a surge tank + efi pump in the engine bay (or inside front guard)
I will more than likely build an enclosure in the rear quarter when I do a full rebuild of the car.

Hey, goto:
http://photos.yahoo.com/fat_tony99/

for some pics of my engine bay. might not be up to date, but should be some..

I used the flex pipe from the 22-RE AFM, fit perfect.

My fuel setup uses some V8 lift pump at the back, which pumps hi volume/low pressure to my engine bay through a slightly bigger line, into the surge tank which is mounted at the front-right of the bay on a platform on the chassis rail, the hi-pressure pump os right next to the surgetank outlet parallel to the chassis rail on a pump-clip, then straight up to the injector rail, return through the regulator back to the surge tank.
Very small loop of high pressure fuel. this is what i like, and definitely no surging because the tank at the front is never empty and will keep the pump fed all day Very Happy

Sounds exactly what I'm doing but I'm not sure if the engineers in N.S.W. like tanks in engine bays.

Thanks for the 22-RE tip I'll go looking.

Yeah yeah, I'll fix it soon enough. Actually I have the $$$ to do it now, I just need to get motivated enough to deal with the deadshits at Repco/Autobarn/wherever and acquire the necessary parts. The people who work at those places are completely hopeless if you're not asking for Ford/Holden parts. Rolling Eyes
