heavy steering Thu, 18 September 2003 11:50 Go to next message
we just bought a 9/1988 seca ae82 and find the steering is extremely heavy. (it doesnt have power steering). could it be that there is something wrong with the car? or have we merely been spoiled with our last car having had power steering. having had a closer look at the car after getting it home we think it may have been in a front end collision as the bonnet appears to be pushed back a bit farther than normal. could this possible prior damage indicate there may be a problem with steering?

any ideas would be greatly appreciated

thanx

Well, my ae95 had a very badly leaking steering rack so i disconnected the power steering belt. This results in very heavy steering.

Check your tyre pressures and get a wheel alignment done. Both of these have a big impact on steering feel.

If you think the bonnet is pushed back because it scrapes the driver side windscreen wiper - this is a common problem, my son's 1988 AE82 does the same. If you are looking for a power steering conversion let me know as I am about to remove one from a Twinky donor car.
