I need to know the exact curb wieght of an ra40 liftback. I want to put a 1jz-gte in it but cannot until i find out if it is legal. Someone out there must help me. I desparately need to know if i can legally swap this engine in. I don't need yes or no answers either. If yes tell me the contact number for someone who has done it. Help.

nope weight not on engine plate and the manual doesn't tell the wieght. I have rang dealers and toyota themselves and mechanics and lots others with no luck. Not even gregorys manuals tell me. Have searched the net way too much for it too.
PS. Any celica modders in ipswich come and chat with me. I am usually at starmart friday and saturday nights for a while. i drive the yellow ra40 liftback with the bullet holes.

On my rego it states a tare weigh of 1300kgs. This doesn't seam right and i need a curb weight. I don't even know exactly what it that is but hopefully someone out there does. If you can't tell me that then tell me the legal limit for a turbo engine in this model. Thx

In NSW Engineers have a document that lists the weights of all vehicles for engineering purposes. These may not be the same as "rego" weights but unless you have a document from the cars manufacturer that states otherwise it is what the engineers work off.
I suggest getting in touch with a local Auto Engineer in your area. From memory, QLD laws are now the same as NSW. I know of a few guys in Brisbane that have fitted 1J's into RA23's so can't see you having a problem.

The conversions were done by the guys themselves. I suggest you get in touch with your local registration authority as they should be able to give you a list of Engineers.

Get a list of Engineers from the RTA and call them. Different engineers will tell you different things.
Before I did my conversion, I call about 12 engineers. Answers ranged from a flat no to stuff like having to do brake upgrades as well.
If you're in NSW, I recommend Frank Lohning. He said that the conversion was legal and not to worry about brakes. He tests the cars personally and passes them depending upon his judgement, not by what the paper from the RTA says.
