Is my carby stuffed?!?

Hi, i own an 84 corolla and i have a small problem but it doesnt happen all the time...
i'll be driving along in 1st and it'll suddenly cut out for about 1/2 a second and then return to normal and it wont do it for probably 4days...
i thought the carby might not be getting enough fuel to it?
and i think this could be a problem because i can smell unburnt petrol on startup (it doesnt crank over straight away (can take up to like 5-7secs) like it's running rish :\
and another quick question... IF my carby is stuffed would i get a performance increase outta say, a Holley carby or a nice carby like that?
just one more!
would it increase performance if i bored it out from a 1.3 to either a 1.5 or 1.6??
*i'm relatively new to the whole car seen so dont flame me
Thanx.

first thing are you sure its carbie? (84 should be efi)
if it is take the air cleaner of and give it a good squirt with carbie cleaner (you might want to change your plugs after)
and no if you put a holley on it will run worse you need a webber for your 4cyl
and no if all the rest of its stock it will do sweet fck all if your going to do anything get an exaust.
im no corolla expert but im sure it will be efi

i dont run the tank on low much at all... maybe towards the end of the week (when i need petrol) around probly wednesday everyweek.. (would be no less than 1/5)
not sure when it was changed but it looks alright.. (well, it loos new (( i got car about 2-3months ago and it had a recond engine and most things were replaced like the fuel filter and stuff..))
nah, it's carby, i'm 100% positive.. i just changed the spark plugs so i dont wanna change em again (could i just take em out and put em back in after?)
i already have an exhaust and extractors (came with car) so in this case would a webber give a performance increase?
thanx for the replies fellas

come on tight arse jks
plugs cost like $4 * 4 =$16, you have to have the car running when you put carbie cleaner in there.
I had a problem with my carbie the other week and it turned out to be some shit stuck in the jets.
a webber will give you a performance gain if tuned right get a pro to do it (a carbie place will but ask around for qoutes).
It would be even better if you got your manifold + head ported
but then your talkin $$$ get a decent air cleaner for a cheap upgrade

so if ive got a 4 cyl i should only fit a webber, and if i have a six/eight only fit a holley?, didnt E49 chargers have tripple webbers, must be why they ran so badly, should've had a holley.

No did i say that
He said should i go a holley i said no go a webber
the chargers had 200hp with triple webbers so i dont think they were shit.
You can go twin webbers on a 4cyl but a holley is over kill it would run like shit unless you had your foot down all the time.
fkn smart ass

I've had similar problems with a later model carby and it turned out to be an earthing problem that was causing the fuel cutout solenoid to shut off. I tightened up all the earthing leads I could find and in my case the problem was two earthing wires coming out from the loom at the back of the motor below the carby and attaching to the inlet manifold. Mine is a 4AFC engine but I think the carbies are similar. I also found the temperature gauge kept fluctuating from normal to hot - solved at the same time as I tightened the earthing wires.
Hope this helps, Cheers.
