Lexus IS200 6 speed gearbox Sat, 20 September 2003 11:54 Go to next message
Does anyone know what model the 6 speed gearbox is in the Lexus IS200. I have been told by one importer that the Altexxa Beams uses the same box as well??

It is an Aisin Warner box and is common with the Mazda MX5.

Yes, it's the same box though with a different bell housing.
They're made by Getrag, and are also used in the MX-5, 200SX, and S2000.

Thanks Bill

You don't happen to know the model number for the gearbox.

Trying to find out how much power they will take??

Have a 1JZGTE VVTi to fit into Lexus and are debating which gearbox to use. The V160 will require tunnel mods to fit in, the R154 will be a squeeze but is only 5 speed.

I have been told the Beams puts out almost as much power as a 1JZ so the gearbox may be capable of holding that much power as long as it is not abused.

Any thoughts??

S15 silvia or 200sx is 2l turbo putting out close to 200kw.
But its torque that does the most damage to gearboxes.
My guess is the 1jz up a long way in the torque stakes, if the car is staying stock it could be ok.

The BEAMS 3SGE's put out about 160tf-lbs of torque, I'd guess the box would take a fair bit more than that though as they look pretty darn meaty to me.
FWIW I have one for sale - Since you will have to alter the bell housing anyway to fit it to the back of the engine we'll have to talk ... Wink
The box has literally about 20km's on it. No, not 20,000kms, 20kms only. It's pretty much brand spanking new. It lives on the Gold Cast so not far away.
Catch me on email - billzilla@billzilla.org

I don't know what the box is called sorry, never seen any designation anywhere.

Bill

I don't need to buy one - there is one sitting in the Lexus.

Rollin Imports has one for $3000 if anyone wants to know the value of them.

Evan

The 1JZ VVTi version has a lot more torque than the normal 1JZ so would have to be treated with care if fitted with the baby 6 speed.

I look at what power the S2000 puts out - it is fairly potent.

Sorry to nitpick Deesonet, but the VVTi 1JZ doesn't have that much more torque than the older 1JZ. 371Nm compared to 361Nm.

The deceptive part is that max torque is available at 2400rpm on the VVTi model, whereas the non-VVTi model max torque kicks in at 4800rpm.

Yes your right - not much more but at a considerably lower rpm.

I think that this may play havoc with the standard 6 speed.

I'd be going for the S15 silvia box, as i think the ratios would be more suited to the torque of the turbo.

That said, the IS200 box would be pretty close ratio anyway, one would think.

As far as I can find out so far the Silvia turbo 6 speed is the same box as the IS200. Silvia torque output is 203 lb ft.

It must be a trade secret in Japan as nowhere can I find a reference to the actual gearbox code?? Some people say it is an Aisin Warner Box and others say a Getrag.

I don't think it is Getrag as they don't have a six speed listed in their range with the ratios. They only have two six speeds listed - the V160 and a heavier duty one used on the M3 & M5 BMW's.

Lexus IS200 Ratios
1 = 3.874
2 = 2.175
3 = 1.484
4 = 1.223
5 = 1.00
6 = 0.869
Diff = 3.909

Lexus were concerned enough about the gearbox capacity to not put it in the IS300. At 218 lb ft that is not a lot more than the Silvia.

Doesn't make sense to me. Of course Lexus in Brisbane are not helpful at all. They don't want anyone messing around with their precious cars. There in for a shock!!!

The Gearbox factory believe the ALtezza 6 Speed is basically the same as the MX5 and 200sx 6 speeds. They also seem to think they will hold up just fine.

Mine is going behind a very modified Turbo 2TG and will be seeing plenty of abuse so once its all running I'll soon find out if it is up to the task.

And as for value... Mine was BRAND NEW (ie still with the shifter wrapped in plastic and not so much as turned over) and it only cost me $2000.

It's not a Getrag - it's made by Aisin Warner.

TRD make a close ratio set for the Altezza 6 speed. I think it costs over 2K.
