Momo wheel on Autotecnica hub? Tue, 16 July 2002 02:55 Go to next message
Is it okay to put a Momo wheel on an Autotecnica hub? My car came with an autotecnica wheel/hub when I bought it, and I have a Momo wheel to go on. The hole spacing is the same and it will bolt on, but size of the hole in the middle where the horn button goes is different. I think I just need a Momo earth ring
($2.20 at Autospeed, $7 shipping!!!!)

Any thoughts on this? When I emailed autospeed about the ring, here is their reply:

-----------------------------
I'm not quite sure how you'll go putting a Momo steering wheel on an
AutoTechnica hub. It may be possible, but we wouldn't recommend it. I don't
think that it is up to the same safety standards as a Momo hub.
-------------------------------

When I asked what saftey concerns, they said:

------------------------------
As far as safety, I know the Momo one is TUV approved. I'm not sure about
yours.
--------------------------------

Any thoughts on this? What is TUV, and are Autotecnica and Momo hubs really that different?

Well if Autotechnica is making wheels which use their own hubs and stuff...I can't really see the problem safety wise...

Methinks they might just want you to buy more! Razz

Yeah, thanks. I emailed Autecnica and they said all steeringhweels/hubs sold in Australia have to meet the adr/10 standard.

The Momo wheel has a smaller centre hole than the autotecnica one. It seems I can put a Momo wheel on an Autotecnica hub just by using a Momo earth ring, but I'm not sure if it would work the other way. It SHOULD, so long as the momo hub does not have a smaller internal diametre than the autotecnica one. If it did, the Autotecnica earth ring would not sit inside the Momo hub.

Anyone done this before?

The Autotechnica hub usually has both its own and the momo pattern. You cant put an Autotechnica wheel on a Momo boss though as a momo boss has only one pattern.
I have both brands of boss kit and wheels and i found this out when i went to put my Autotechnica wheel on my momo boss, it wouldnt fit but the momo goes onto the second pattern on the Autotechnica boss.
The boss complys to the same standards and will be fine. Also the earth ring shouldnt be needed as long as your horn button fits in without falling out.

Thanks heaps for your reply, excactly what i wanted to know. I noticed the second pattern on the Autotecnica hub, and have trial-fitted my Momo wheel, but I need the momo earth ring to keep the horn button in. It's loose in the middle of the wheel, plus there's no real way to earth the horn securly without one. Not sure if they're supposed to come with the wheel or the hub or both - either way, the wheel was secondhand and I only got the wheel and the horn button.

As you have both sort of hub, are there any real differences between the Momo & Autotecnica (part from the extra pattern? Do Momo bosses come with that corrugated sleeve like my Autotecnica one, or are they all smooth?

My boss came with my car and happens to be a pretty good match for the interior(blue). Do they generally come in a few colours other than blackor did I just get lucky?

Hi mate, both of my hubs are black and corrogated but the momo one looks a bit more well made. I think you must have been lucky to get a blue one cause all the ones ive had were black (which is good cause i have a black interior!) They do come in other colours though. The earth ring comes with the horn button for around $30 from memory however im sure you could get the earth ring on its own for bugger all. If you have any car shops like Mycar autobahn etc near you they have them or can order them in (mycar stores here all closed down but i dont know about tassie??)
Good luck anyway mate,

Jamie.

Thanks man. I know autotecnica horn buttons come with the earth ring, but i didn't think Momo ones do. The local autobarn doesn't even sell Momo wheels, just autotecnica ones, though they sell Momo knobs so I might ask them.
