Really bad fuel consumption from my 4AGE??

Hey dudes, ive been doing some searching and it seems that many ppl have really bad fuel consumption in 100kw 4age. Like Rolla Boy with 300km/tank
I get about 360km/tank on ultimate 98 when im driving pretty tame.
This has to be wrong, i swear it never used to be this bad!! In addition, i get quite a bit of carbon built up on back bumper indicating engine is running rich, and when i dump it friends notice a more than usual amount of black shit pissing out my exhaust pipe (fuel)
This has been hapening for quite sometime, ie before exhaust and airfiter etc
Is it possible that an O2 sensor or something has gummed up or tripped out causing the ECU to run in default (RICH) safe mode to prevent engine damage???
Has anyone had same problem, and if so, how did they fix it?
All input appreciated

Hey mate,
I've got a 100kw 4AGE in my AE86. The black smoke your talking about should start pouring out the exhaust at around 5,000rpm to redline (really noticeable at night looking in your rear vision mirror). This is because the injector cycles change at 5k and allow more fuel in (you can hear a change of note in the induction at around 5k, kind of like a super piss weak vtec ). This is normal for 100kw engines. The black stained bumpers were giving me the craps aswell. What i did to fix this was to change the cams to 86kw cams . they bolt straight in , have 240 duration instead of 232 and slightly more lift. You'll find as i did, once you change to those cams (or anything bigger) the black smoke will go. Mine has gone completely.
My fuel economy is quite good , usually get around 450k's to a tank (ae86, around 45 litres). I use Optimax all the time. Never had a problem with my twinky
Hope this helps

dude i reckon 300-350kms per tank(35L) is alright around town, i normally get 320 or so befor i fill up.
one time i filled up all the way until it poured out of the tank (about 1-2litres ended up on my car, i was day dreaming at the servo.) and i was coming home from canberra and done about 350kms on half a tank (freeway average speed of 115-120km/h doing about 3500-3700rpm) so i reckon its just the start stop thing that drinks up the fuel.
as for the black smoke ????? no idea and i dont see any from mine may be there is but i don't see it.
a question to the gurus out there... i have a problem with my car.. late 91 corolla GTi... the things is that after a fairly hard drive i park the car overnight and start it the next morning and when i start it a SHIT load of white smoke comes out (exhaust) for about 10secs...so whats wrong?? and theorys appreciated.

Yeah dude I get a bit of white smoke some mornings (89 4age), but not every morning. Engine performance is not affected it seems.
I was advised that it was worn seals - but being unmechanically minded I haven't got it fixed due to labour costs just to find out the problem. The engine has to be got at from both top and bottom = time = $$. Keep an eye on your oil levels I guess.
Time for an AGZE conversion?

Cheers heaps for the info mrsoopra, did you get a noticeable performance increase changing to 86kw 4age cams? And how much did they cost you? Did you put them in yourself?
About the white smoke, i get it too. My research has lead me to the conclusion that my valve stem seals are gone/going. If you still get good power at high rpm then rest assure its probably not your rings. I think after a hard night thrashing (3am 3Celcius) after you park it, the oil leaks through valves or something (seals) into chamber.
Rest assure dude, i keep thrashing it

White smoke in the morning may not be a problem at all. It usually is condensation in the exaust pipe. The black smoke is that your running rich fuel in your car. Rem the 100kw was setup to run your standard fuel. Since you are driving around the suburban areas you start and stop alot. Only when you give it a decent thrash do you get enough pressure to push out the soot.
If you wanna get rid of it try this. Get some injector cleaner and go for a decent drive down the freeway for about 1/2 to an hour doing about 110km/h and you will find that the buildup will go away. It also seems to give you back abit of fuel economy back also. I've done this in the past and it worked every time. I just ook a trip to Newcastle and that blew out all the black soot.
I've got bigger problems my car only does like 260km on a full tank!(35ltr)

the 4age 100kw was actually set up to run on regular peremium (95 octane).
