Should I do a conversion ? Sun, 21 September 2003 12:35 Go to next message
Im contemplating wether it is worth spending the odd $4k or so and do a GZE conversion in my twincam AE82. The benefits I can see is that I will learn a HELL of a lot (doing it myself), my car can then be called a little beast (i.e will have a lot of power).

Trouble is I am still at uni, saving for a house etc etc and people are saying its not worth the conversion just wait until you have plenty of money for a better car.

Which is kind of true... I will have a fast car but yet the paint is no good, there is spot rust, interior is dated etc.. so will I be wasting my money? The car has to last me another 3 or 4 years and some main seals and gearbox will need to be replaced very soon.

Just wanted to know other peoples opinions !

well, depends waht your priorities are.
if you want a house badly, I'd be saving my money .. screw the car.
if you love fast cars, then spend the $4k, have a nice little car with balls, and you'll be putting off the house for a few months

considering the same kinda options for my sprinter
but my paint, and everything is top notch so its a differant kinda situation, and i do want the power, but not sure if i want to get it with a sprinter or with another car

its really up to you,

when you get out of uni, and buy a house, you have to pay morgage, and possibly wife a car, and then kids etc etc... other things come first, unless you are fantastic at what you do, and start getting 70-80k in the first few years of working..

its just really up to you, do you want a faster car, or do you want to use the money on a holiday or something like that,

When it comes to spending money on cars, I've always thought "you can sleep in your car, but you can't drive your house"! However, after spending a lot of $$ on a Datto 260Z for no return, then spending a lot more $$$ on a ma70+1jz for good return (fun wise) and now saving up for a house deposit I'd be more inclined to buy a house as soon as you can when starting to work full time. You'll have to scrape the money up for a car whilst paying the mortgage, but at least you'll have a house/shed to build it in, and it will encourage more "value conscious" decisions rather than splashing loads of cash around.

The more responsible side of me having spoken, I must admit that when I was growing up, all I wanted was a really fast car Very Happy And that I have one, all I want is to make it go faster Very Happy Very Happy

join the club!
for some reason 190rwkw is not enough.
I'm gonna need around 230 just to keep me going till I can afford a new fuel system and a big turbo or 2

I will be doing a single turbo conversion soon.....but it's going to be as low cost as possible (coz I don't have $4000 to spend on a T67 kit). I've got a hybrid T4 sitting in my office at the moment, old school but should be good for reasonable numbers, cerainly beats spending any money on the twins.

I have heard of a 1jz for sale in Adel wih a twin Blitz turbo kit on it if you want some big power late in the rev range....

Hmm well maybe I should just do the necessary work on my existing engine to get it running properly and save my other cashish.

Does the red top 100kw require a different ECU to the blue top 86kw because that would be a simple swap if I can leave the ECU. And will allow me to rebuild the redtop while still being able to drive my car !
