Rust: the most common places are the hatch and the panel just below the windscreen. Check all the usual places though, some MA61's have been badly affected by rust.
As for the engine, check for tell-tale signs of a blown headgasket. Also listen for bottom-end noises, timing chain rattles and of course do a compression check. A high-mileage or poorly-maintained 5M-E will be pretty easy to spot - they don't like being neglected!

things to look for
1: on the piece of metal in front of the radiator, there should be a number. if there's not, the car's been in a collision and repaired.
2: rust.
-ALL around the hatch (dont skimp here, it could be anywhere). especially at the very back under the plastic cover on the inside
-along the roof, at the back where it meets the hatch.
-back left and right corners, under the rubber seals where the hatch closes (pull the rubber seal up - this is a REALLY common place)... also the top corners under the rubber seals where the hatch closes
-bottom of the doors. get down and have a look at the very bottom of the doors on the inside.
-at the bottom of the windscreen on that black weather strip thing
beyond that, just check general body condition (ma61 parts are hard to find, and a bit pricey), plus all the usual stuff you look for in a car.
that may sound like a long list, but as with all cars there are good examples and there are shit ones. I just crashed one of the best examples in australia, so have a bit of patience when looking for one

well, I'd be ignoring whatever they say. if it's rusted, you can use that as a "well, it must have been out in the rain a fair bit" and get the price down.
ma61s gor for anywhere from $2000 to $7000
if it's got a bit of rust (as it probably will) but the body is straight & paint in good nick, about $4k - $4.5k is a decent price.
dont be afraid to bargain!! if the guy's not an ma61 freak, he'll probably be suprised when you show him the rust in the hatch (which there will be) - use this as a bargaining chip

Take a screwdriver to undo the plastic panel on the underside of the hatch. Good bargaining tool and good piece of mind. Check where the "sunshade" is bolted to the hatch as they sometimes rust there too.
Under the windscreen is a pain, and check whether or not it is actually the metal underneath as a lot of the time it is the panel that runs along the windscreen.
Along the top where the hatch meets the roof can be a problem. Its a pain to fix properly if it is. If you can catch it early all is good.
The front corner of the rear wheel arches can sometimes be a problem. Sometimes it bubbles up underneath.
Bottoms of the doors often rust out, check this properly.
My car is currently in a million pieces and I've found rust in a million places I wouldn't think of. My best advice to you is to look carefully, take your time and make sure there is good light.
