Is there any way to get them working without factory computer controlling them?..... Full manual shift would be fine.
Maybe something like the Toyota A241E A/T (4agze or 4age 20V automatic transmission).

i have a friend who builds his own efi computers that was fiddleing with this idea, we was looking into controlling the auto box that comes with the 1g engines. i'm not sure if he got very far, opted to go manual conversion in the end i think. he was going to use his custom built computer to control the 2 solenoid positions in the box that determines what gear the car is in (i think that is right descritpion he gave me).

Norbie,
Give Michael from MV Automatics in South Australia a call. He can supply a kit to do what you want. It's designed for the A340E box though, but he has experience with other autos and should be able to help.
