Midsump: Crown Royal Saloon (by far the most common one)

if you dont know the difference b/w a lexus ls400 and a soarer you are totally blind.

both these cars are quite common on australian roads.
one is large sedan and the other a coupe.

ok, let me clarify this before i go positively bonkers figuring it out

the rear sump and the mid sump are the same distance from the rear of the block but the mid sump is longer and thinner? as opposed to the rear that is shorter but wider?

i came to this conclusion by comparing the pic of the underside of the soarer, and that pic of the 1uz sump that GT posted the other day

PLEASE tell me if i am going crazy and seeing/dreaming things

I don't mean to be a pain but don't you need a front sump anyway? I'd imagine the mid sump will sit right on top of your cross member and the rear sump will really be cutting it fine with your steering rack (all guesses of course).

I'm going to assume you will want to keep your gearbox in the same place, so you need to measure the distance from the front of the bellhousing to the the back of the rack, and also to the front of the cross member. Then measure the distance from the back of the 1UZ (where the bellhousing bolts up) to the fore and aft extremities of the different oil pans. I don't mean to sound nasty, but I think you are anguishing over nothing! Smile

The front sump sits a long way forwards, and actually has a section that projects forwards under the crank pulley (bit like an Altezza 3SGE). Ultimately, you need to get out there with a tape measure and go nuts. Also if you have a digital camera handy, take a gazillion happy snaps.

yes, yes and most likely yes

yes, i do want to keep the gbox in the same as i want to go manual 1uz, and having it 4" further forward could create problems. however, norbie/ed have given me a possible solution to this (i think an r154 or v160 would also cure this, but $$$)

if i was gonna leave the 1uz auto, then none of this would be a problem Sad

i didnt know that the front sump actually extended further out, thanks for that bit of info. maybe modding this sump would been the best.

i have been meaning to get under the car and do some measurements, but with my trolley jack out of order for the mo, it has made it a hard thing to do
i will try and do it this weekend tho

cheers GT

Ah, didn't realise you were going manual. Adds an extra degree of difficulty.
Have you spoken to Jamie or HKSPete? Both these guys have manualized their 1UZs....maybe they'll be kind enough to get under their cars and measure things up for you. Be sure to ask which shifter position they are running.

hehehe, yeah, it kinda does throw a spanner in the works.

nah i havent spoken to em yet, but i'm pretty sure that neither of them had front mounts sumps to begin with, so this wouldnt have been a problem for them
plus, i'm currently using the second most rear shifter position, so getting are more rearward one seems unlikey, and would only make up .5" at max

i'll work something out, even if i go auto for a while, and go manual later when i have more money, and get a custom sump built

The lower part of the sump can be taken off the main part of the sump, and then modified easily. Main part - part that goes from sump to block, and runs all the way down the block to catch oil and funnel into lower sump. Lower sump - bubble bit that the oil actually sits in and the oil gets picked up from.

I started with a mid sump (crown) and went rear with the rear sump and pickup I simply swapped them over. Only problem was the dipstick which I'm still having problems with.

And I'm running a R154 box with a belhousing made from dellows that was 5mm too short.

Get the bellhousing from CRS.

I also had this problem. In the end I tapped a hole into the aluminium corset and Loctited a fitting in place and press fitted a length of aluminium tubing as the dipstick. I also had to lightly trim the baffle plate for the dipstick. It was easy to get the right length when the motor was out of the car.....not so sure how you'd easily do that with the engine in situ without getting machinings into the sump.

Unfortunately GT, it doesnt, unless there are 2 front sump varieties. (Can you clarify this?)

The front sump I have drops straight down at the front of the motor, doesnt extend.
