Whats wrong with my diff??? Mon, 22 September 2003 12:24 Go to next message
Ok i have an ma61 supra, with the f313 lsd diff. its a manual car. Im trying to fiz a problem with the diff before i get the new engine running.
Heres what the problem is (what used to happen)
For instance: I'd be pulled up at a set of traffic lights, and when i started to go, and let the clutch a little out to start with, it used to make a huge "clunk" noise. And you could feel it too, like some sort of backlash.

Without fail this happened every time i pulled up. It wasnt the tailshaft, as it is new , not the clutch either.

Im pretty sure there's some sort of "play" in the diff somewhere. Could it be the clutchpacks/ bearing etc???

Thanks - Blake.

Crownwheel and pinion needs to be adjusted or replaced. Speak to a diff shop, they'll know exactly what's going on.

yeah the crownwheel looks fine, but perhaps as you said it may need adjusting. Anyone on here know anything ahout adjusting them? Im not wanting to pay a diff shop $200 to just adjust something thats all!

It really could be a range of things if it is your diff, none of them good.

Check the usual suspects first...tailshaft and also the central tailshaft bearing. Whilst you are under the car, check to see how much backlash is on the diff by rotating the tailshaft whilst the car is in neutral and handbrake on. If there is heaps, then it suggests something is up inside your diff. If you are confident setting up your diff (ie you have a bearing press and the appropriate tools to measure the correct amount of pinion preload), then hop to it and save $200.

I know I'd put it back together only to have it moan like a cheap hooker. Very Happy

lol love the expression dave!
Nah is not tailshaft..its new with new bearings, uni's and all.
Its a bit hard to check it now, its on the garage floor Razz
It just needs to be fixed before the new engine's running thats all...
