here's the 411,
i was rolling back from jambo coming down a hill in a 60 zone, a cop pulls out in front of me and pulls me over, he also pulls over the bird on my right.
he comes over to me first and does the formalities {do u know speed, what speed were u doing ect}
he shows me the gun and says: "this is not your speed {shows 83} this is her speed, i had to cancel your speed to get a fix on her speed. Can i have your licence.
i thought that he was gonna give me a warning and such, but i had a suspicion that he was gonne book me, so i got out the trusty digi cam and started snapping away.
he came over and hands me a ticket,
me:why are you giving me a ticket
pig: cause u were speeding,
me: you cant prove that i was, how can u possibly book me
pig: look, this is the law; i do not have to prove to you that you were breaking the law at all, i dont have to show you the gun its just a police policy.
me;
pig: i trust that you will drive home safely
me; FUCK YOU PIG, BIG BURNOUT ENSUED {then i stopped dreaming}
me now: i'm taking them to court
I dont know who say today tonight about the bloke who was apparently caught speeding and took them to court, the police officer said that at 250m away the "laser" was 1m wide
he got HER at 370.5m away, so he had to apparently get me, see the speed, cancel it, then get her and that was only then 370m away, at 60kph u r travelling at 16.7meters per second.
u work it out
and remember that these things cannot be held PERFECTLY still, so a margin of error for movement is involved too
think i have a chance
update: and the pigs aren't allowed to pull over more than one person at a time, my sister got caught doing 160 down the M1 racing a R33 GTST and cop pulled them both over and had to let her go with a "stern" warning
i got $250 and 4 points

at a previous job, our a/h unix support guy was a cop who worked at red-light camera unit (was nice guy actually)
i vaguely recall him saying that he could stand up in court and say something like "with my 12 years experience as a traffic officer i estimated that the defendant vehicle exceeding the speed limit which is why i put the radar on him..." so rather that focus on the actual speed, they'll simply reduce it to an argument that you were probably doing more than the limit, e.g. "...he was keeping up with an other vehicle that i observed travelling at 83kmh with my calibrated speed measuring device, your honour..."
i think that the points/fines thing only relates to regulations regarding road use. if it goes to court, they might ignore those regulations and look generally at the law which says you should obey the posted speed limit or be fined/jailed (an amount as determined in regulations pronounced by the relevant minister) BUT GET LEGAL ADVICE before shakin' down the cops ...
and don't forget that you need a licence to:
get to work
visit your ill/ayling relative in some far off place with no public tranport
that you're the only person in your family of 38 that can legally drive
that you partner is pregnant/ill/... and you are care for her and take her to hospital, etc
do volunteer work for a charity delivering food/care/dogs to the ill/aged...
...
Charles.

Yeah. I was talking to a police mate of mine, and he was saying the same sort of thing. It just comes down to his word vs yours. And apparently, any cop over the rank of a Seargent is allowed to book you WITHOUT any "proof". So just hope that that is not the case.
But good luck anyway dude.
