Hey. I am wanting to learn how to paint cars. My brothers cars paint is tarting to peel, and is crows footing in areas, and my car needs touch ups in a few places. Is anybody on this board a painter or has done much automotive painting before. I don't want to risk screwing up the car, but I was just wondering if it is really hard, or just time consuming and where i should start etc? I am thinking about offering some time to a paint and panel place on the weekends so i can learn how to do it.
Thanks

Hey Jason,
Ive just resprayed my sprinter and it tooks yonks to prepare it properly.
It depends what type of job you want and how good your existing paint was.
I spoke to heaps of guys as it was my first time doing this as well.
This is a ROUGH idea of what i did
Cut the rust out and weld up a new piece of metal in there.
Then sand down my old paint to get rid of all the damaged paint.
Then high filled the entire car.
Then sanding the high fill down to get a straight smooth body.
Then away to the painter.
That is a rough idea..but i hope it helps..
Ask me if your unsure about anything..

He im in the middle of a respray and the best tool for sanding is a cp air random orbital palm sander. I am using 320 grit and did one side of my sprinter in under an hour. There is not a single swirl mark and it comes out smooooooooth. Very much worth the price. Prep work is everything. paint isnet very thick and dosent hide anything underneath. Make sure you use the same brand for primer and colour and clear if needed.
