listening to Police on scanner radio

Hello folks
How's legistlation over there in Australia on scanner radios? I have read you folks cannot have radar detectors (nor can we either). Does this apply to scanner radios as well?
In Finland one can legally sell, possess, listen to a scanner radio. However, one cannot legally record in any manner radio traffic. One can not use information gathered in this manner to his/hers advantage. So if I hear there is a radar patrol up the road, I should not slow down to avoid a speeding ticket.
Unfortunately the Police is slowly moving into fully digitalized radio trafficking. This will mostly make scanner radios obsolete. Regardless of this sad fact, the scanners can fortunately be used to detect a presence of a nearby Police patrol. Technique involved is identical to what the Police use to detect a radar detectors from peoples cars. We just use it other way 'round - to detect them

The same goes here in Australia! We are allowed to own and listen to a scanner as long as we dont record anything or use the information in any way! As for Radar detectors, we are allowed to buy these in all states but not allowed to use them! In Western Australia I think your allowed to use them! Might be South Australia? Radar detectors are just scanners them selves! If you have a scanner you can use it to detect radars! There is no law against this!

I forgot to mention about the Police here in Australia going digital! There has been a lot of talk about this and thats all it is at the moment! I work for a company that supplys most of the 2-way radios to NSW and QLD police and at the moment they are still buying lots of conventional radios! The police going fully digital here in Oz is still a long time away!

Yep, all a radar detector does is receive the oscillations from the radar! I cant remember the exact frequencies off hand but you should be able to find them on the net somewhere!

a normal standard CB is just a device that transmits on the 27Mhz range over 40 channels police use the 400Mhz frequency range and nope you can't buy them except a scanner which you can go buy at good old dicky smith depending on how much you spend can listen to a large range of frequencies an up market one costing $600-700 you could pick up anything from around 30Hz to 1700Mhz a good cheap scanner simply to pick up the main frequencies would be about $300 for a decent brand and the fun part is trying to find the frequencies the police actually use as they use different channels depending on what suburb they patrol usually you just scan through the 400Mhz band till you find them but if you live on the north shore of sydney i can give you the frequency for them. but i don't think you can use a normal scanner to pick up radars as i did some research and radars operate on a minumum of 3Ghz now i haven't heard of a scanner being able to pick up those kinda frequiencys yet unless your willing to spend big big bucks

You can get them from just about everywhere! Just shop around for the best price! If you just want to listen to the police, just about any cheap scanner will do! I personally use a modded Icom IC-R10!
Oh, just remember that NSW police use different frequencies to QLD police! You could always buy a UHF 2-way radio that also has the receive police channels! I have a few of these for sale! But I dont think you would like the price!

Many years ago I heard of a guy who re-tuned an old 450MHz frquency band mobile telephone for a specific job. (This was a bulky & hefty mid -80's car phone you more or less permanently install in a vehicle). Fact: all receivers in the world generate a very miniscule radio frequency carrier wave leakage. Depending on numerous factors, this can be detected. For example in United Kingdom the BBC requires all people watching TV's to pay an annual fee for television services. Some people don't pay. What BBC does, is they send 'detection vans' to patrol the streets. Equipment in those vans can detect this miniscule leakage a TV set radiates. They can even tell what channel they are watching.
This is exactly how the Police find out people having radar detectors. They have equipment to sniff oscillator leakage transmitted by radar detector. Some radar detectors are not 'visible' to the Police. This is just because manufacturer had gone their way to alter electronics inside the detector, and the oscillator leakage is moved to some other frequency that the Police is unaware of. Knowing where it is, it too could be detected.
Test this yourself. Switch on your home stereo receiver, tune it to whatever frequency. Take your VHF scanner radio, tune that exactly 10,7MHz higher frequency. You'll hear a carrier wave hum. That will vanish as you turn off your home stereo.
Back to the story. This one radio amateur had converted this old 450MHz mobile phone to listen to police radio equipment oscillator leakage. Whenever this device 'went off' ,he knew there is a police patrol car nearby. Pretty clever 'eh ?
My few first experiments have shown my scanner radio to be too insensitive to pick weak signals at longer distances. To help in minor speeding instances, I should sniff the coppers maybe like 200 to 300 meters away. Right now it seems not feasible. Well, should give some warning when overtaking an unmarked Police car (or when they approach from behind) with this insensitive setup I have now.

Scanners are not very sensitive recivers! This is because of the broad band they receive over!
