Hilux LSD feedback Wed, 24 September 2003 23:17 Go to next message
I am in the process of fitting a hilux lsd to my rally car and have heard conflicting reports about the effectivness of the centres ability to lsd. I took my centre to Trans Diff in Bayswater to get recoed and they said that they loosen up really easily and cannot be shimmed up for extra preload. I was wondering if I could get any feed back from those who have them in their street cars. I am talking about genuine abuse, not just occasional spirited driving.
Is it possible to fit a Torsen centre from a later model? Can you get it in the correct ratio for my application, eg what is the torsen ratio not the diff itself. How does that centre work with the 30 spline hilux axles. BTW use XF Falcon discs on the back, super easy to do and massive. Effective handbrake and easy to get parts for. Just buy the discs undrilled and get them done for the stud pattern you require.
Cheers any feedback would be appreciated.

Yup, TrueTrac is the way to go but it seems they're impossible to buy locally... you have to get one shipped from overseas. Another option is the factory torsen centre in JZA70's, but they're probably not easy to find.

Mine seems to have remained pretty tight after having been shimmed - no idea what they used, possibly cut a shim out of a Coke can Laughing . Apparently, they have been known to loosen the pinion nut and self destruct.
It's easy to convert to disc brakes if you want to use integral handbrake calipers (all you need to do is get a caliper bracket and handbrake cable made), but they're so heavy. Although, in the context of an 80+ kg diff assembly, what's a couple extra kilos between friends?

just a quick question, feel free to shoot me down, but:

wouldnt the torsen be a bad idea for rallying? would a TRD clutch G series be a better option?

So your diff has not come loose at all Mr Tomato? Is that whith your m engine or the 2jz? I have spoken to a few of the other guys who rally and use them, but they all think that they are the best thing around. I get the feeling that Trans Diff are basing their dislike for the centre on the chev powered hilux that a customer has. Apparantly it would "unlsd" diffs over a period if six months. But i reckon spinning 35 in tyres in tarmac may be a little more harmful than spinning 195 rally tyres on loose gravel.
Norbie, will the torsen be able to utilize the hilux axles?

The TrueTrac is designed specifically for the Hilux, so you won't have any problems there. I don't know about the JZA70 centre but I suspect it would work if you mix'n'match the bearings as appropriate.

I have been told Hi-Lux LSD's are only 2 pinion ones where as MA70 ones are 4 Pinion, able to be shimed and are a lot stronger.

Dave and I both have Supra LSD centers and required different barings to support the center as the IRS center is 5mm biger on the ends, being that the standard listed barings for a hi-lux are the same for LSD and non-LSD hi-lux diffs I would seem that its true.

I bought a LSD centre out of some 4WD model (6 stud hubs) and it's 4 pinion. The GZ20 rear end I bought had an LSD centre which was also 'shimable' and will fit in the Hilux but looks like it needs some different bearings (which I bought and have the part numbers for but it's raining and I'm not going out of the house).

Will the later model center with the 4 pinions bold straight into an older housing?

The later 4 pinion diff will bolt into the old housing , Most of the 4x4 diffs I've seen are 4.3:1 the 2WD hilux with the 22r has a 4.1 the 2Y and 3Y have 4.5 ratio the older 12r has a 4.875 , The standard diff and LSD have different carrier bearings and yes shimming does work , The above is what I have seen , I shimmed a diff using brass shim material and shimmed to .165" .

Just picked my diff up this afternoon. They managed to shim it out 35 thou each side, so it should be relativly tight. It is a four pinion out of an rn104? 4.88 anyway. The only issue that I may have is the longevity and predictability of the centre. The one that we are using now will become unpredictable and often single spins after a few competative stages. I suppose all that I can do is give it a go.
Thanks for the feed back guys.

Most petrol and upto late 83 Hilux 4WD were 4.625.
Diesel 4wd 84-88 4.55
Diesel 4wd 88-9+? 4.3.
US are almost all 4.1(no Diesel).
But all 83-89(+maybe more 4wd) were 4.625.
Shimming is like shimming most Toyota diffs A WASTE OF TIME.
Only find true track with difficulty what a load shit of shit.
Look around you web page puristist.
Shit I ran a Lokke Right in the front of my 75 series for years.
No 2y-3y would havr come with 4.55.
