Best Material for airbox construction? Thu, 25 September 2003 11:27 Go to next message
What is the best material to use int he construction of an airbox in relation to heat transfer/absorbtion properties.

Im going to guess carbon fibre, but anything else that people can inform me of is cool.

Prices too for materials would be nice.

Ta, guys.

hehe where does one find this stuff and is it any different to what STR8 2.8 suggested?

I want to do the intake once and get it right, ceramic coated stainless piping, removing resonators, boxed pod filter, cold air intake.

Very Happy

well...

a polished metal finish will reflect some direct radiated heat, but it still absorbs quite a lot, and will absorb heat by conduction from the hot air too.
what you need is to minimise the:
heat absorption onto the outer side,
heat transfer to the inner side,
heat transfer to the incoming air.

i would say the best would be to use a core of very insulating material, expanded polysteyrene comes to mind, but that is flammable and not petrol vapour resistant... maybe expanded polyurethane (i think that is what is used in industrial fridges??) like the "space filler" cans you can get.... but i'm sure you can get sheets from somewheres, mayeb try clark rubber? they might know.

anyways, and then use either fibreglass or carbon fibre for the inner and outer surfaces.. bonus is you can shape the foam and lay the glass on top. laying on the inside might be interesting, but you could do it in two halves and then epoxy together.
heat transfer coefficient of f/glass or c/fibre is much lower than any metal.

next is to get a fridge compressor and... Razz
