was talking to toyospares and the guy said he had a couple of 5MGE's for sale but would not offer a warantee and didnt like selling them.
he said he had been burnt on his last 2 out of 3 5MGE's
I have heard they are prone to oil pump and cam journal wear???
also whats the prob with the 6MGE crank pulley.
Im looking at a 5MGE this weekend what should I be checking specifically on these motors.

The crank pulley bolt is never tightened back up to factory spec once it has been undone because it is uber tight!
AS a result over time it seems to slowly work its way loose and the key starts carving out the keyway, until in the case of my engine, you can see the pulley vibrating back and forth.
Ive been told the toyota fix was to weld the pulley to the crank!
So have a look at the keyway and see if its worn.
Oh and 6mge pulleys are not available as a spare, they are a combo of 5mge and 7mge parts and neither will work. Need a new pulley, need a new engine!

The cam journals wear because the cam towers warp.
Remember these second hand motors are 20 years old - I wouldn't sell one with a warranty either!

yeah I agree - its fair enough.
but Im still interested (crazy / stupid).
why the heck should the cam towers warp - and is it related to age. ie does it usually show up after a certain distance travelled.
how can I check for this?

a) no idea.
b) dial indicator.
Surely they aren't THAT much cheaper than the 2JZGE that is there for $800?

yeah actually he still wanted $950 - so ill give that a miss.
the 5MGE im looking at is at another wrecker.
Im sure theyd let me pull the cam covers of and start attaching dial indicators etc - theyd be like "you wont find a motor better than this, no need to check it, trust me" - not!!!
Id love the 2JZGE but ive realised the conversion is going to be too exy - so im going the M series.
anything to improve the performance/economy im getting with the 5me.

Don't expect much (if any) improvement in fuel economy. I've owned a 5M-E, 5M-GE and 6M-GE, and they all used lots of fuel.
I agree with GT's sentiments, a more modern engine is the way to go. Sure it will cost you more in the short term, but the advantages can't be ignored - it will use way less fuel, it will be more reliable (ie it's not 20 years old) and of course it will have much more power.
I did a 6M conversion 4 years ago and it worked out really good for me, but back then 6M's were cheap and easy to find while 2JZ's were nearly impossible to find and ludicrously expensive. It's completely the opposite today - 6M's are difficult to find in decent condition, and most of them need a rebuild anyway ($$$). 2JZ-GE's on the other hand are ridiculously cheap for what you get and being a much newer engine they're unlikely to need a rebuild.
If I wanted a cheap upgrade from a 5M-E today, I know what I'd be doing - and it wouldn't be another M engine.

Dropping an old 5MGE in when a perfectly good 2JZ is there for not much more is false economy IMHO. They really are so cheap now, particularly for what they are.....remember they have only 5 hp less than a 7MGTE, few reliability issues and no HG concerns.
