w58 repair

My '86 Supra w58 gearbox is very 'whiny'. I'm thinking about taking it out and repairing it myself. Is this a hard thing to do, and do I require any special tools to do it? Alternately, is there a cheaper way to replace it without paying $900 for a specialist to fix it?

Thanks for the advice. The whine is bad in 5th gear at 80 k's, but almost non existant at the same speed in 4th gear. The other gears are not as bad as 5th, but still noisy. I assumed if it was drive train or diff, the whine would be consistant at 80 k's in any gear. What do you think?

Sounds like a bearing in the layshaft is on its way out. The layshaft sits idle in 4th gear, so that would explain why the noise disappears in 4th!

One of the most eaiest's box's every to rebuild.
Basic tools plus a bearing puller kit and all is sweet.
Rebuilding a gearbox is easy(W5X-W5X???) easpecially
Last one cost me $250 for the bearing kit plus beer!& time.
To be honest if you wanted to learn how to rebuild a gearbox a W?? would be good place to start.
So basic it's allmost funny.
Bye one for $650-550 fuck that is all the car is worth in most situation's
