Just after some ideas on which would be the best engine to drop in a 86 Aus spec Celica ST (FWD manual). The most important factors are cost and ease of conversion. The car currently has a clapped out 3SGE (original motor from 1986) and its starting to hurt so I'm looking to dump it and drop in some power! Any ideas or opinions welcome.
Without doubt a fresh 3S-GE would be the easiest. With some mild work you could be looking at around 125Kw or so.
Next easiest is a late model 3S-GE.
Easiest turbo motor by far is the 3S-GTE but you are probably looking at around $4K+ inc the engine for the swap. Might be better to flog off the ST162 for around $2K-$3K and put your $4K cash together and buy a ST165 GT4 like this one:
In my 13 year old stockish GT4 I ran a 15.85 1/4 mile @140kmh, on a hot night (29 degrees!) at Willowbank.
Given a cooler night, I think around 15.6 is normal.
0-100kmh is around 7.7 - 8.0 seconds depending on launch. Not that quick, because the car is so heavy. But the 3S-GTE has enormous potential and its easy to get around 300hp from it (205hp stock (ST185)) and drop that 0-100kmh time to around 6 seconds or so.
