I don't use the google toolbar as it leaves your browser open to third party browser extenstions, (which you need enabled for it to work), and I don't trust leaving that enabled. Any old thing can then hook onto IE.
For popups, I have my own custom hosts file that I'm constantly adding to. The popup still happens, but it's empty.
As for banner ads, Agnitum outpost pro is taking care of those for me. 99% of ads are taken care of. For most of them it puts a [AD] and a link to the ad in place of the graphic the ad would normally use, so it's still clickable, just not an annoying animation in your window.

Firebird does both popup blocking (as do all browsers based on the Gecko engine) as well as ad blocking. Plus it's a great, lightweight, modern browser to boot. And it's free. What more could you want?

I use the google toolbar. Been using it for quite a while and love it. Wouldnt go back now. Not too worried about the 3rd party. If you read their T and C it is really not that bad.
