18RC Engine question

If you know in detail anything about the 18 RC engine then you may be helpful, changed the sump gasket last sunday a process i don't plan on doing again unless i have a hoist in my garage! anyway i found in the bottom of the sump two pieces of metal, which i traced back to be missing from the 3rd and 4th piston. now if you know how these pistons look then you would know that they are like all pistons round at the bottom except on two sides of the piston the bottom extends a little bit lower which kinda looks like two flat dags hanging off each side of the piston now on the 3rd and 4th piston these dags have broken off, has anyone heard of this happening before and what does this mean for the engine what do these parts do? they could have broken off anytime in the last 7 or so years since the gasket was changed last time and there are no signs of stress, dints or heat fatigue on the broken off parts so who knows why and how they broke off but it would be interesting to know if anyone has had this problem before? (Engine still runs perfectly fine with no vibrations, knocking noises or so forth) so who knows what these bits do.

it could be that it is caused by the piston fit in the bores being too loose and getting piston slap where the piston slaps up agians tthe inside of the bore. if i were you i would junk it and buy a second hand one for about $300 if the piston to bore clearance is to great if you wanted it to run properly again it would need to bored oversize and oversize pistons and rings fitted.
the part you are talking about that has broken off is the piston skirt.

its just the engine runs as if nothing happened and all the cylinders have a compression of around 180psi so i can't think theres so much of a problem except at the end of the year i'll be driving down to Tassie (via a ferry of course) so the test will be how it handles that its been down to melbourne before and took it in its stride except on the way back while cruising at night i was sitting on about 160km/h for about 5min and then looked in my mirror and saw sparks skatering all over the road and when you see that it scares the shit of ya. pulled over couldn't find anything wrong with the engine oil preassure was fine so forth then i looked at the exhaust and it was glowing red, so i avoid drivng at high speeds for to long a time now.

What you describe sounds familiar to what I found the sump of my 18R-G (18R-C bottom end). What colour are these little bits? Greyish?
I assumed the bits I found were from the timing case as one of the cam pins had fallen out and ended up in the sump. This was found a week after I had got the motor going after a rebuild.
And yeah, pulling the sump off is an absolute bastard on an 18R Celica.

on one side of the bits there is kind of a lip where on the other side its nice and shiny, i confirmed they were off the pistons as i got under with a torch and could see the bottom of the pistons and saw where they had come from. if i end up getting a new scanner i'll scan them and put them up on here.
