wet weather tyre recommendations??
|

Heya Ppl,
have searched around the threads looking for suggestions for a nice wet weather tyre.... and am more bewidered than before
i have been pretty happy with the 185/60/13 Hankook 866's so far, as they slide quietly, had enough grip in the dry, and were tolerable in the wet... now wet weather seems a little more treacherous
what i am after is:
185/60/13
slides quietly (ie no squealing!!!), to not attract unwanted attention,
very good wet traction.
wear is not that much of an issue as the car only weighs 700kg, but a lack of choices in this size is a real problem.
can anyone suggest a site that has listings of tyres from different manufacturers with sizes available?
thanks in advance,
Stewart

Just put a new set of tyres on the cressi today and was talking to the bloke about wets, he said Avons are the best wets in testing at the moment. I choose? Kumhos and they are not what id rate as a good wet tyre
actually my Yoko's on the rolla arent bad for a wet pretty hard to break traction but lots of side wall flex
the best ive ever had was a NZ dunlop tyre called aquajet, absolutly superior wet road tyre, dunno if you can get them here though?

Aquajets used to be by far the best in wet weather. They had textile bands for flexibility but that meant they used to wear fairly quickly. Wet or dry they were pretty spectacular handlers. Haven't seen them around recently unfortunately.

thanks guys,
wow, the dunlop aquajet was developed in the 60's!! about the right era
after looking up heaps of tyre sites, about the only 185/60/13 i can find are
Pirelli P6000
Toyo 600F3
Toyo Proxes RA1 (maybe a little sticky for my budget )
KUMHO POWER MAX 769
hmm, not much seems to be around.
havin trouble finding Falken and Yoko listings...
i'm leaning toward the pirellis atm. hmmmm

have you had a look at the Falken range? I used some of there stuff back home as well and it wasnt too bad.... not as good as the dunlop but still up there and not as quick wearing and expensive as the pirellis,
is this for the road or for race stu? if you want race i know a good place to get some as i just picked up a real cheap set of rally tires yeasterday
also... my rear discs rock!!!!! just got them all on yesterday, get the handbrake cables back today... one issue... my bigger master cylinder isnt big enough LOL and i reaaaaly need the brake bias adjuster which should arrive in the next couple of days will send you some pics soon

no, i've been trying to find an online listing to no avail... will email them today..
my girlfriend had P6000's on her audi 90 for ages. and she chewed thru them no end!! the car is almost twice as heavy as mine tho
yeah, this is for the road if it were for racec, i'd prolly get some used formula ford tires
i rebuilt mym carb the other day, and made some small changes to jetting (mains 155/150 to 145/150, and airs from 180/180 to 165/170), and also changed timing 2 deg..... amazing the differencee tho. feels slower as it is better mixture through 'normal' driving rpm, and is smoother.... but yesterday went for a drive after it rained, and had a few 'moments'.... first moments for a while, and 2nd gear was even dicey in a straight line , so i figured it's time to finally get better tyres .... had balked before as i didn't know how the camber change would affect tyre wear, but they are wearing even, so is ok.
yeah, i have always been tempted by yoko's and Falkens, but tyre dudes always say they are not good 'value' and i haven't been looking for high performance tyre either...
cooooool so you took it for a drive??? too much rear brake bias???? fantastic WIFTT i have to come and see all your shiny stuff!!

Stewart, have you looked at Goodyear Eagle F1s? They're freaking awesome in the wet!!!
The last time they were in the Motor Mag tyre comparo, it blitzed the rest of the field in the wet.
I had P6000s on the back of my car for ages, they were REALLY hard to wear out!!! And believe me, with a single spinner, I was trying!

yeah tjhe F1's look really nice, but the GS-D3 starts at 15" and the GS-D2 starts at 14"
LOL, i could get Grand Rally S again, 175/75/13 they were a shit tyre....
so what else can you tell me of your experience with the Pirellis??
of course i could always go to a larger rim size, but finiding +25 offset in 14 or 15" old mazda pattern is not that easy (for low $$) technically, i can't go more than 13" without engineering it anyways, since my car cam with 12's... then again, i shouldn't have 185's either
(mmm 155SR12 stockers)
much looking to do still...

Cant you go 2" bigger? That would mean you could get 14" wheels. My Bridgestone Potenza RE711's are awesome in the wet, and the dry.

Bike Tyres heh heh,i'm sure there are bike tyres bigger than these
Tempe tyres said
Quote: | What is recommended by our tyre specialists is the Falken Zeix tyre. This wheel is a soft compound tyre and has a special groove is the middle for the rain. It is known for it remarkable handling while be quiet at the same time.
You will be looking at $100 per tyre
That is GST incl.
|
hmmmmm $100 for Falkens??? /me never heard of Ziex before....
better than $90 for Hankook 866's
they look like they have a big channel and look aggressive....
thanks guys

I've had Pirellis twice on my car.
The P6000s in the back came with the rims and had prolly 50%-75% tread on them. They lasted two years of wheelspin. So the compound is pretty good with regards to wear.
Loss of traction was very linear... They don't suddenly let go like a lot of other tyres.
Very satisfied with the grip too...
Very good tyres over all.
The F1s were a bit average in the dry, not much grip and feedback was a bit.... quasi...
But in the rain.... Oh my!!!
I was never worried about understeer in the rain! (I had them on the front).
Not sure if all this applies to you though... Different weight car and very different tyre sizes.... I have 235/45R17s in the back...

I've got these Kuhmo's too (and just not coz they have Supra written on them!) but I find they are bit of a bastard with traction in the wet. Often the car will spin in 1st and then step sideways into 2nd when you don't realise the've been spinning
Maybe it's the 1jz??

ive got Goodyear eagle f1 GD2's going on my gt4 on monday - ill let you know how they go for wet weather handling and traction ..
I had Goodyear eagle f1's ( original style ) on my ta22 - and i was majorly impressed with their wet weather handling.
Ive driven thru HEAVY torrential rain with total confidence with the f1's. In the wet that are probably not as good as nitto's or Falkens - but they are a softer compound tyre than the goodyear -so thats a bit obvious
Got yoko's on the Gt4 Atm and they cant hold a Candle to the goodyears for wet weather goodness - they are also quite noisy - f1's are quiet

/grins they would be the stock size tyre for my car! methinks not even being Aquajets will help a 155 tyre....
LOL, i could get polyester crossplies and put my camber back to 1.5 deg positive
man that was scary in the wet...+ve camber, 155/12's.... kinda like wearing slippers on an ice rink..

I used to do return trips from Sydney to Sunny Corner in a Datsun 1000 with 155x12 aquajets - used to handle like it was on rails - rain, hail or shine !

Just thought I'd chip in. I have Bridgestone RE711s on my celica sx and they've been pretty good. But the compound is too soft and wears quickly, and there is a bit too much sidewall flex. Still, very good performance in the wet and dry, if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of longevity.
The only bad thing is that they don't come in your size. Pirelli's are probably your best bet, but look at the price tag on them first!

I'd second that - I've had a set of these for about a year and 3/4.. Have pretty much completely worn them out now, but i've found them to be awesome in the wet & dry.
Don't know if they're likely to make them in any smaller sizes though (I didn't want to go bigger than 15" wheels, and some tyre places tell me that it'll take them a while to get the "smaller size" tyres in).

Uniroyal "the rain tyre" should be available in your size. Have a second set fitted to the car. About $100 each and awesome in the wet and dry, and got about 120000 k's from them.
