Hey guys,
Looking at getting a programmable ECU for my AE86 (100kw 4AGE). I dont have Motec money at this stage, so just wondering on everyones thoughts/experiences with programmable stuff on a 4AGE. I know you get what you pay for in terms of quality. And at this stage, the less money i spend the better .. hehe. Anyone used Microtech or Wolf?? Thanks in advance..
Cheers

Also I would prefer to use the standard sensors on the engine. So what ECU's can do this?
Thanks again

I've only had experience with Haltec and Autronic.
I'd never buy a Haltec again.
I am very happy with the Autronic.
But Autronic are not best known for being compatiable with original sensors. But I think this is debatable.
Standard water temp sensor is fine, original TPS (assuming its the 0 - 5v style) is ok also. A reluctor interface can be added for ign signal I think (I went direct fire so used a crank angle sensor and cam position).

Megasquirt cheapest, easiest to use, can use original temp sensors (you may need a variable TPS rther than a switch TPS tho),
closed loop, real time tuning, datalogging. etc etc. can have ignition control....
but is more DIY.

Aftermarkets are good but i think it would be a waste on a 88kw motor. I think your better off spendign that money and getting a half-cut 20v or gze. They will prob do better power than your current motor with a computer.

sorry on the 100kw i think it might be ok. But you'll need more air-intake, exaust before getting the aftermarket and then tunning it.

Limbi,
Yeh its 100kw. I'm not putting this ECU on a standard engine. The engine i'm building is being modified beyond what the standard ECU can cope with. Air intake will be solved with Quad throttles (main reason for aftermarket ecu), and will be using fairly high duration cams, adjustable gears etc etc. Exhaust is already organised. . Thanks for the info sofar..

i have set up heaps of microtechs on 4ages, even the 86kw motor responds very very well to the after market computer,
the microtech can use all your factory sensors, you wont have to change a thing,
you have 2 choices you can use a LT8 with the stock coil and igniter, or a LTX8 and use 4 bosch coils,

A LTX8 at the moment is $1095 with loom, coils are $200,
I am a Microtech dealer and can supply you if you wish,
the new range will be out in a few weeks and there will be a price rise of around $200 when they are realeased,

Where will that mean it will fit in with the current ECU's available, will it be as good as say an Autronic, or better or worse?

the current range will be no longer, they will be replaced with LT8s, LTX8s, LT12s, LTX12s, they are a lot smaller than the current range as well, they are the same width but the same length as a LT4..
the processor speed is idential to a Motec, and the tuning will be better than the current range (user definable points etc), there is nothing wrong with the current range at all in the way they can be tuned, the new ecus resoultion will be to the power of 6 compared to the old ones, so they will be a lot more powerfull, at the moment the resoultion will go down to .01 when it needs to so that will give you a indication of how fine then new range will be.
im putting a LT8 on my girlfriends car (ep91 starlet) if i thought the LT8's wearnt good enough for it i wouldnt be putting one on it, all she wants is a little more power and the little turbo we have for it should do that, all i need is her in my ear about it!! LOL
the current range work a treat with the 4age's i have done 3 or 4 of them in all sorts of cars, even circuit cars, the racers that just love them, they cant believe the extra power that they got for so little money,

the current range dont, im not sure weather the new ones do or not, closed loop is a bit of a wank anyway, a good tuner will get better economy than closed loop will anyway,

How about these? Would be handy if Microtech had a decent website like the others:
a)priming pulse and afterstart enrichment
b) warmup enrichment
c) acceleration enrichment and deceleration cut
d)you want correction for intake air temp
a) an 'intelligent table' where the injector pulsewidth is interpolated for all rpm vs MAP or AFM, rather than a step function.
b) good pulsewidth resolution for accurate fuelling (maybe 0.1ms is good, since minimum opening time is in the order of 1-2ms, and max opening at 80% duty cycle @8000rpm is 12ms)
(This lifted from my other thread as examples of good economy and drivability features).
Basically, I've read too many reviews of Microtechs drinking the fuel compared to others and I'd like to know the real truth...

ill answer all your questions for you ,
a) yes it has a priming pulse, cranking enrichment, after start enrichment,
b)yes it has 16 load sites for water temp correction, with interpolation between them, it also has cold accel pump enrichment for crisp throttle transition during warmup
C)yes it has a 2 stage accel enrichment, 1 for low rpm and 1 for high rpm, you can adjust the amount of fuel, the time the extra fuel is injected in for, the amount of throttle to trigger it (either in map or tps)and where is turns off,
D) yes the microtech has both timing and fuel corrections for water and air temp.
A) in matrix mode, you have a full set of 3D maps, which you have a full set of load points every 500rpm, when tuning in this way it fully interpolates between all the load points, basically the same load settings as a e6k haltech, but with BETTER interpolation between the load points.
B) the main problem with microtech economy is that people dont bother to set them up, they pay $200 for a dyno tune and they then bag the ecu casue the tuner was careless and never set them up, i have tuned 4ages that get better economy than standard and also WRX's as well, economy tuning is not hard just takes time and thats what people dont pay for when getting a dyno tune done.
i will let you know when i fit the LT8 to my misses car, it is totally stock apart from a pod filter, exhuast and 17" wheels,
