modern air intake systems tend to be pretty damn good, and pod filters provide minimal performance gains (unless you call an awesome intake noise a performance gain ), and actually decrease performance in some cases. if you drop a K&N filter in it, and possibly look at a cool air intake, that's your best bet (I dont know the layout of the car, so I cant offer anything specific)

Like Draven said, you can actaully make modern cars worse by stuffing around with the intake. Just drop in a K&N or Uniflow replacement filter and make a cold air feed. Theres plenty of room under the bonnet so it shouldn't be too hard to find somewhere to run a peice of pipe.
Other than that my wifes vvti conquest seems to go flat in the top half of the rev range. I think a free-er flowing exhaust would make a fair difference. Just don't go too big or you could risk losing the good bottom end throttle response.
Once you have done that you could fit a piggy back computer like a unichip and get it tuned properly on the dyno.
These should give you a decent improvement over standard. Any more than that and you may as well have bought a sportivo for the money it would cost.

my dad has an 03 levin, and picked up a TRD airfilter element which, if the advertisements are correct, should increase power by ~5kw.
Penrith toyota (you get a discount there if you become a financial member of toymods) offer a drop in TRD element for around $140, and also a full 2 inch exhaust system

Custom made extractors and stainless steel exhaust system now available for the Corolla. Complete system will give a 16% increase in power

check out their page for more ideas.
It depends on how desperate you are for the supercharger kit, cos you could ask around and try and get one imported from the states or japan, but youre gonna need piggyback ecu that controls it too, and it will probably cost more than a bundle.
