Intercooler upgrades (1JZ-GTE) Sat, 04 October 2003 02:45 Go to next message
Hey guys, just a quick question:

I am running the standard JZX81 fmic at the moment (550x300mm). Will there be substantial benefits upgrading to a larger intercooler (600x300x76) running close to standard boost?

if so, im getting new piping fabricated anyway to move the old intercooler forward and i was looking for suggestions whether or not it will be worth it.

Thanks

"A must have... for the street racer look"
makes me question it already Razz

yep it'll make a difference for sure. it'll be more noticable at higher boost of course, but will get you some more rwkw at stock boost

Yeah.. they sell all that sort of crap.. like those too furious flip flop boots and stuff, but the coolers look fairly similar to the stock GTR specs.. and theyre a way load cheaper than the HKS/Apexi counterparts.

Its not really a necessity, but ive just come into some money and i was considering it if i have any money left over from other mods.

thanks

Heya Speaka,

I've done the same as you, came across some money, bought a nice Hybrid Cooler, same dimensions of the core as the one you listed. Mine is an older one, but it is in extremely good condition, no leaks apparently.

I was originally looking for a GTR intercooler, but came across this one for $600 from Hikari in Adelaide.

This will be front mounted on my 1JZ GZ20 Soarer, in place of the stock FMIC. I'll also need custom stainless steel pipes, probably installed by Exhaust Technology in the future.

As I'm making around 185 rwkw at stock boost, I'd suggest that the larger cooler and raised boost (14.5 PSI with a celicamad boost controller) will make around 200 rwkw or maybe more. Currently my car is in getting an oil cooler, larger intake pipe which extends into the front bumper, MicroTech extra sensors and tuning, and a few other bits and pieces.

Hopefully it will be a nice car to drive after everything is done. I'm also looking at removing the B.O.V. and oil catch can to avoid obvious defects.

Danish.

Yeah thats about the same..
but, i seemed to have come accross a GTR cooler too, its almost the same dimensions as the hybrid one, but 1mm thinner, im going to try and get it put in at the same time as the dump pipes.

when you say stock FMIC, do you mean the old 1G cooler or some other that came with your 1j?
