air in brakes Sat, 04 October 2003 05:26 Go to next message
Hello, i'm trying to help a mate out with his 280zx.

Its been sitting around for a year or so and i was bleeding the brakes.

Did the back fine and peddle was feeling pretty good.

Cracked open one of the front calipers to start bleeding and lost all peddle feel. Bubbles are coming up in the fluid in the master cylinder also.

How do you tell if the air is getting in the caliper, or master cylinder?

Thanks
Joel

hey joel how u doin

bes way to test things out is to get some vice grips and crimp off each brake hose at a time

get osmeone to pump the pedal before and after u crimp each line

if the pedal feels heaps harder after u crimp a brake hose
then u might still have air in that line

normally the pedal should get a touch harder

of u could crimp all lines off and push pedal
release one vice grip at a time and see which line drops the pedal the most
this way u can eliminte the good from the bad

im puttin lexus in my ute in few weeks

Hey Jim, i'm good mate hows you been?

Cool i'll try crimping off each line to see which one is causing the problem.

Even when bleeding it just keeps spitting out heaps of air and never seems to improve so i'm guessing air is getting in somewhere.

i have come across bad master cylinders

especially if they have been sitting for ages

best bet is fit a new one if its been sitting for a yr

not worth fukin with brakes if they have been sitting for so long

Hmm yes it would have gone all the way to the floor. Why is this a problem?

Thanks

cause during normal operation the master cylinder is never going all the way down ....so theres always a bit thats unused.....and that unused bit starts getting corroded ...

so when u DO finally push it all the way...the corroded part, being all bumpy and rough.....tears the seal

however i have yet to do this.....and i DID push my pedal all the way down on my 74 celica when doing the pads..but i was lucky i spose....however obviously its still possible

especially since it was sitting there for over a year without being used....as opposed to being used partially

did this make sense ?
