1J Fuelling Upgrade Thu, 18 July 2002 03:17 Go to next message
At present I am looking to get the most from the stock turbos.

I need to know wether the stock 1J fuel system is up to supplying 300kW safely.

I have got quotes for a New 600HP bosch and associated surge tank. I want to use the stock lines for now. Quoted $1000 installed. I am getting a flow check later next week, so I'll keep all informed.

Does anybody have the specs for the 1J injectors as I need to check wether they will flow enough at a maximum duty of 80%.

Basically I just need some advise regarding the cheapest way to acheive what I need in a practical way without spending a quoted $2500-$3000 for a whole new fuelling system.

Thanks

Not sure about the fuellinog, but remember the CT12A's are only good for 14 psi safely before they start to fall apart !

Not true,

I have run mine for 10,000k's at 15psi and looking to run 16-17 with the twin exhausts. A large intercooler gains you about 2psi in the intake.

From what I understand, the stock turbos run out of guts a tad under 200kw at the wheels. You can wind the boost up higher, but the extra exhaust backpressure and heat is all that's generating the boost, not decent airflow. I took a close look at a pair of CT12's off a 1jz yesterday, they are BLOODY TINY! To be honest I really don't see how they flow as much air as they do (just) manage to. Standard injectors (cant remember off the top of my head how big they are) are quite happy to run those stocky turbos off their dial. What pump are you using now? It never hurts to have a big arse pump, but it sure hurts to have a tiny/buggered one! Remember engines cost more than pumps.

Is that 300kw at the wheels or flywheel?
Stock injectors, stock pump and stock CT12A Turbos have produced 225rwkw in a number of cars.
At 220rwkw I've seem injectors at 70% duty cycle negating the need to whack on 440cc replacements and fuel pressure was normal.
I'm told that by 250rwkw the ignition system needs upgrading/improvement to cope and 440cc injectors are then required for safety/reliability.

OK, thanks guys,

Looking for 300rwkW, but will more than likely fall just short of this.

I guess the best thing to do is to finish the exhaust mods and intercooler mods, put in the proper FCD, and check it all on a dyno at 14,15,16psi. it simply sounds to expensive to continue further with the stock turbos, may as well go for a big single and upgrade the whole lot.

Sounds like the fuelling upgrade money could be better spent elsewhere. 70% sounds ideal, I have beed recommended 85% max.

Keep you all posted on how things go.
