I'm painting my ae86 in 2pak I would like to know after I primed the car with 2pak primer, which grade of wet/dry sandpaper should i use to sand it back ? and How smooth does the surface has to be before applying top coat ?... Some ppl are telling me I have to get the surface to a almost mirror finish and some ppl are saying if I get it too smooth, the paint won't stick ... One more thing .. after i sprayed with top coat (2pak paint) Can I sand the any rough spot and paint over it ? or Do I have to snad it all back and re-prime it ??
Any help would be appreciated !!!!!

hey dude, my sprinter goes in to be sprayed tomorrow in 2pac and i think the primer has to be smooth but not a mirror finish cause the paint wont stick to the primer as you mentioned above and nah to sand back any inperfections in the basecoat all you need to do is rub it back with 2000 grand sandpaper and then buff the whole panel....
goodluck dude
ps what is the colour your painting it???

Block the undercoat with 180wet/dry then 300 wet then 500wet. Then spray your top coat. After you have the top coat on and is fully dry and you find any dirt etc in it you can rub with 1000/2000wet lightly then cut/polish this may remove it.

When spray painting, the final finish has a lot to do with the preparation. before sanding the primer coat, you need to apply a guide coat, an aerosol can of black acrylic will do. Dry sand with 800 to 1000 grit paper, any finer, and the paint will simply not key into the undercoat, and will result in a poor job. The guide coat will all rub off on the level surfaces and high spots(these will show first), but will still be visible in any low spots, which will need to be filled (microfine filler) or repainted with primer to build up the low spots. If you are after a show winning finish, you may have to re-prime and rub down a couple of times. Time and effort spent now will really reward you in the long run!
regards Chuck.
ps. I'm not a pro, but have painted dozens of cars.

After the primer coat several people told to sand down with 800-1000.Mine turned out great!!.
Anything finer and the paint will not stick.

Guide coat: re-read what I posted, if you sand til all the guide coat is gone, you will achieve nothing!.
Sand with 800 dry lightly! the first thing you will see, is the high spots, work the high spots down to the same level as the guide coat, then keep removing guide coat, when you see patches of guide coat with nice primer all around them, these are the low spots which will require filling! Then re-prime those areas, and block off to match the surrounding finish, what you are looking for is a surface with no bumps, and no low spots.
Look along the panels changing your eye level up and down. If you reckn its good enough, then go and get a spray painter to have a look at it, these buggers know far more than anyone else, when it comes to spotting problems. If your car is nicely prepared, the workshop nice and clean, most pro painters, will only charge you a couple of hundred bucks to spray on your supplied paint. DO NOT Stress, if the job looks a little dull, or has a few nicks of dirt in it, because when it it is fully cured, and you have got the car back on the road, you can take to panel shop, for a cut and polish, another coule hundred bucks to get a mirror shine,,, well worth it.
regards Chuck.

Good luck with the paintwork. I have done a few cars, but all in acrylic. I have posted some tips on my site regarding spray painting, also see my Celica's. Both I painted in my garage.
Paint info is under "Technical info".
One big tip, 2 Pak is very nasty stuff. SAFETY FIRST! Unless you want a short life make sure you understand and protect yourself from the risks. And NO, a respirator type mask is not good enough, it has to be a full air fed face mask.
