Fuel system Placement: ae86

Hey
Converting the car to efi system,
facet low pressure pump
vl turbo pump
1ltr surge tank
now the problem is where the hell do i put it, there looks like there is hardly anyroom underneath near the fuel tank, and i really don't think its legal to have it in the car, in the hatch area.
I want it as close to the tank as i can so i spose under the car, near the diff and all that, but it doesn't look like there is any location there, has anyone got any pictures of there fuel setup actaully in the car... that would be great
thanks

i made up a little bracket that bolts up to the chassis almost directly above the diff, the brace thing already has threaded holes in it.
all the rest of my stuff is in the engine bay so i can't help u there.
i can try and get hold of a digital camera if you need me to.

The easiest way i found was to cut open the carby fuel tank, put in pump and baffles off a vn commodore tank, hay presto.
Did need new fuel line, but any carbie to efi needs it.
Upgrades for the fuel pump are endless if i ever need it.

that actaully isn't a bad idea, i can get fuel pumps off VNs in wreckers for like 40 bucks... what kind of flow rate do vn pumps have....

I reckon FKN16V is onto a good idea. If I were to do it again, I would try something like that.
I managed to cram everything around the tank, got a Holley blue mounted at the very back on the drivers side, behind the wheel arch and on the outside of the bumper mounting point. Tiny (600ml maybe) surge tank mounted to floor between tank and panhard rod. And Bosch VL type pump also between tank and diff.
All of them are mounted through the floor into threaded alloy plates in the hatch area. It is a total hassle to get at, but hopefully I never have to think about it again.

with the in tank idea, will i have any problems, with fuel surge, its not a track car, only a street car, so i don't think its going to be a real problem with this sort of setup,
but to me the VN idea, seems the cheapest and the easiest way to go about it...

I'd like to know more about this also.. Would like an intank pump arrangement in my RA28.
Is the baffling any good from the VN? I heard it was quite average.

hey guys,
i've got my surge tank in the hatch and it bloody stinks of fuel- just remember to use teflon backed fuel hoses or u can get teflon braided hoses. U still get fuel vapour out of the rubber ones.
Just my two cents worth!

Nice one FKN16V.
Have a look here and read the paragraph under surge tanks
http://www.mwmd.com.au/fuel_tanks.htm
Sounds like you can get the lot done just like it came out of a factory.
Cheers

I was charged $300for the tank conversion, that includes tank, pump baffles, instalation of pump and baffles, plus the pull out and istallation of new tank.
Might be cheaper now.
I get no fuel smells, the pump does have a slit buzz to it but the exhaust note takes care of that.
Im not sure about a vn pump into other tank, trial and error i guess.
I believe the sprinter and vn tanks are the same shape, the vn is a lot deeper thou.
Draw a basic design of your own fuel tank and look at others that will fit the bill, you never know what other fuel tanks maybe similar shape to yours, and maybe the baffles and pump are compatable.
Hope it all works out for you.

mate i just slapped a lift pump outside my fuel tank and it runs fine. never had a fuel surge but then again i dont run my tank close to empty as you shouldnt with an efi car anyway. and in regards to changing the fuel lines, im using the stock lines with my gze running 15psi and ive NEVER had fuel starvation problems.

FKN16V - Mate, where abouts did you get those tank mods done? I live on the Central Coast not far from Maitland. Very interested in getting something like this setup shortly.
Youngy - I emailed MWMD to ask about what they can do in regards to an internal pump with functional baffling and surge/swirl pot. Will let you know what they have to say.
EVOSTi - In my AE86 with 4AGE I also just run a hiflow pump cable tied to the tank. Bit of a dodgy setup but it doesn't seem to serge even with a fairly low tank (not that we make it a habbit to get real low). But for boosted applications I'd be much more inclinded to run a proper setup.
Currently my RA28 has a lift/prime pump with a very large surge tank (5L or so!) and a Bosch merc. pump and works well except the surge tank only fits in the boot which is illegal and sometimes on hot days smells a bit.
Cheers
Joel

bah it works fine, its not dodgy (ie cable tied) ive made a proper bracket and it all sits sweet. you have to remember that most things in cars are over engineered. i doubt that in my application the stock piping wont be able to flow enough fuel.

They say :
"We do not usually modify existing tanks. They are usually pressed from steel and have to be cleaned of fuel, cut open, modified and welded back together. You would be better off building a tank from aluminium, Designed from scratch we can include all required baffling as well as an integral surge tank and fuel pump mounts etc. In the end it would be a much nicer job."

Yeah it probably would be a much nicer job, but what does it cost?
That seems to be different from the impression I got from their website, "We can also mount the fuel pump in the surge tank which is useful when you convert an older car to EFI but want to keep your existing tank"
Interesting

Yeah its all a bit contradicting.
I'd imagine a lot of expense in making a tank from scratch.
Would much prefer just to find someone who can cut mine open and put some good baffling & swirl pot with pump mounts in mine.
The finish would then look factory also.

So FKN16V where did you get this work done, did you get it done in Maitland by any chance?

Yes it was done in Maitland.
It was organised by the person who installed the motor. I went passed the industrial estate where it was taken and that was the only place that looked like a sheet metal fabrication company.
I believe it was done by a company called "Challen Fabrication" 0249 338 315
