can you remove the timing cover on a 2TG or 3TG without taking the head off?

No, not usualy. You also have to take off the sump. The timing cover can be taken off without taking anything else off, but it is tricky and you need to remove the studs in the head and at the bottom where it joins the sump.

i have put the cover on without taking the head off, but it still leaked a little from the top since the head gasket was slightly damaged. you would definately have to loosen the sump. I was using a custom timing chain cover gasket which i wedged between the head and the cover. If you have the cover off i would personally try to carefully get it on without damaging any gaskets before resorting to removing the head, but if your planning to take the cover off, plan to take the head off with it.

thanks guys, thats pretty much what I thought.
The last 3 times its been apart I've always had the head off at the same time, so its never been a drama.
