 head gasket replacement query for 4age 16v

my mates car just had it's head gasket die. it's a stocky tvis 4age in an ae82. the quote he got for a replacement came to $1300 parts and labour. i thought it sounded a little pricey, but never having had my headgasket changed on my corolla, i thought i should ask for some advice. is $1300 too much for that job?
now, the other issue is that the motor is 200k km old. i'm guessing it's getting a bit tired now, anyone have any ideas how much it'd cost to get a rebuilt 86kw or 100kw 4age transplanted in there?

around $1K for a good rebuild
a lot more for 100kw depending on who does it

$1300 is very expensive for just a headgasket. I assume its for a full rebuild though. Its a hell much cheaper to do the work yourself.

dude.. seein as a standard head gasket will cost around 50 bucks... i think there is a lot of labour put on top... who knows..but yea.. ask around for quotes
