Hey, i want to paint my engine. Mainly i want to do the cover on top of the engine and the air induction hose and a few other bits and pieces like the heat shield which gets very very hot. What sort of paint do i have to use, and with the hose and the engine cover, what sort of prepping do i have to do, like do i use any primers and what is the best way to clean before painting. Thanks alot.

firstly clean everything you want to paint (properly)
if your talking about your air cleaner (if its metal) take it off clean sand paint with a hi temp paint but if your talking about a plastic/rubber hose dont paint it the rubber will react with it (i dunno cause you havent said what car) and you need engine enamel paint but i have 2 words for you dude OVER SPRAY (you'll meet him soon enough )

Alright, well my air hose from air filter to engine is rubber, so does that mean that i can't paint it?
I figure that i have to take the engine cover off and then clean and paint it. Is it the end of the world if a bit of paint gets on the inside of the cover? I am assuming yes? How many coats should i do and what primer do i use if any?

if you need to ask what happens when you get pain inside a cylinder, I'm not sure you should be removing the head

that's a much more sensible idea, unless you have another reason you need to take the head off
'scuse scrambled posts and any offence caused. Thesis is causing mass stress and ruining brain functioning.

Um, there's a big difference between taking the head off and taking the rocker cover off guys! You certainly don't need to be a mechanical genius to remove the rocker cover, and then you can take it away and do whatever you like with it without getting overspray all over your car.

It's all the same Norbie. You just undo the bolts, and then you just tighten the bolts. No problem!

*points to said statement about thesis*
I think I should stay out of all tech discussions till that's done, or I'm just going embarass self/give bad advice

Hang on, so that top bit that i want to remove, that has the 4 holes for the spark plugs, and has TWIN CAM 16 written on it, is that the head or is that the rocker cover? Masking the engine bay seems a safer way to do it, but will probably turn out looking bad after it's finished i think. It would be very hard to access some parts of it with the bonnet and other engine components in the way.

the bit with the spark plugs in it is the head. on top of the head, there'll be 2 large metal rectangular bits (which are the bits you want to paint) - they're the rocker covers. you can just remove them and paint

If i did get a bit of paint on the underside of the rocker cover, would it cause any damage? Are they actually part of the engine or just on top of it? Does any body have any pics of their painted engines?
