Initial Start-up and break in after overhaul: 1.Once the engine has been installed in the vehicle, double-check the engine oil and coolant levels. 2.With the spark plugs out of the engine and the ignition system disabled crank the engine until oil preassure registers on the guage. 3.install the spark plugs, hook up the plug wires and restore the ignition system functions. 4.start the engine. it may take a few moments for the petrol to reach the carburetor or injectors, but the engine should start without a great deal of effort. 5. after the engine starts, it should be allowed to warm up to normal operating temperature. while the engine is warming up, make a thorough check for oil and coolant leaks. 6.shut engine off and recheck the engine oil and coolant levels. 7.drive the vehicle to an area with minimum traffic, accelerate at full throttle from 50 to 80km/h, then allow the vehicle to slow to 50km/h with the throttle closed. Repeat the procedure 10-12 times. this will load the piston rings and cause them to seat properly against the cylinder walls. check again for oil or coolant leaks. 8.Drive the vehicle gently for the first 500miles (no sustained high speeds) and keep a constant check on the oil level. it is not unusual for an engine to use oil during the break in period. 9.at approximately 800 to 1000km, change the oil and filter. 10.for the next 5 or 6 hundred kilometers drive the vehicle normally. Don't pamper it or abuse it. 11. After 3000km, change the oil and filter again and consider the engine fully broken in.

you got that out of the celica manual that is exactly how i broke my rebuilt engine in except i didnt drive it gently for the 1st 500 ks. just drive it normally then
and make sure you let it warm up a bit before giving it a bit of a run.
after about 1000 ks on the clock i gave mine a good hard run up and down a few mountains with a lot of twisties and stuff and it has done it the world of good. make sure you use some run in oil for the first 500 ks
i used some by penrite it is about $35 a 5 litre bottle but its what your supposed to use.
i think half the reson my motor died befor i rebuilt it was because i would jump in the car crank her over and tear off up the street and revving to about 6 grand while it was still cold i know that was a serious cock up on my behalf. now i dont even take it over 4 grand untill it is at operating temperature.
treat your motor right and it will perform for you in the long run
