Tacho Problems Wed, 08 October 2003 02:00 Go to next message
After Getting the 18R-GEU on the road and rolling I've been driving around like a bit of a grandpa until I'm sure there are no probs. Last night I gave her a bit off at a set of lights watching the tacho closely I noticed that it hits about 6000rpm smoothly then after 6000 starts to jump all over the shop.
Would this be the limitation of the electronic dizzy or what?
I've checked connections etc. But I'm out of ideas.
any ideas or rectifications?

Cheers

nah your not reaching the limit of the dizzy, even a points dizzy will go a bit more than that before it bounces, we took a electronic dizzy to some crazy rpm (cant remember how much exactly) on a test bench and it just kept on going no troubles Smile

are u using the tacho output of the ignitor (yellow wire on a 5 wire ignitor)?

Also might be worth servicing the moving parts in the tacho itself

I'm using the Negative off the coil.
I'll try the igniter wire later on (read this weekend when I lower the car)

I also noticed this morning that the tacho just drops to zero then back again when cruising at about 2200rpm

I've got a few spare tachos, I might pull one apart and check it out (and maybe do somthing about the lights)

Would using the coil have some interfearance when used with an igniter?

Are you still using the ra28 original tacho. that might have given up. ma TA tacho does a simular thing but at about 4000. never bothered to try and fix it.

just a thought

I'm going to put in another tach and see if if has the same probs

I really don't want to go out and get a autometer (or similar) tacho yet as I've got better things to spend my money on before I start the "ricerisation" stage of my car rebuild.

I had the exact same problem when I put my 18RG in.. The signal was too weak or fine or something for the tacho.

VDO were able to fit new internals into my original tacho. This fixed the problem and needle was smooth as all the way to 8000rpm + Smile

Companys make black boxes that alter the signal for old tachos but i've never had a lot of luck with these.

$120 to VDO and problem solved.

Cheers
